in retrospect, this quick jam, consisting of some 808 drum hits and a bunch of samples taken from a Casio PT series keyboard I bought in a thrift store was kinda the starting point of the whole "recycling old tech" Robot Riddims thing. 

Anyway, I just found it lying about, so here it is for completeness!

British Ambient producer, Lucid Recordings founder, ALUCIDNATION made us a nice, varied selection as an appetiser fro his show this summer at the Ambyss.

Alucidnation was born around the time that Bruce invested in his first home studio gear in 1991.
Although trained in RSM classical piano, he’d always been more interested in improvisational work, quite happily losing hours doodling away experimenting with chords and the sustain pedal.

After leaving school, he spent a fruitful period between 1986 and 1988 working at Fairview Studios in Hull, cutting his teeth on old studio methodologies; editing and splicing analogue multitrack tape, SMPTE time coding, analogue and early FM synthesis and learning about early sampling techniques using AMS gear. He learned a variety of disciplines, including micing techniques and other studio basics – skills which he still utilises today.

After releasing a couple of [nondescript] 12″ singles in the mid 90’s and self-releasing some [very limited edition] CDRs, it wasn’t until his friend Marcus Bailey suggested that Tom Middleton have a listen to some alucidnation back in 2000 that things started to happen.

Pete Lawrence of the Big Chill signed alucidnation to Big Chill Recordings on the strength of ‘I’m Not Bad’, and two critically acclaimed EPs followed, with the debut LP ‘Induction’ coming out in 2004.

Since then, Bruce has toured many countries to perform and way too many positive things have happened to list here; you can find my online scrapbooks, general musings and discographies at.

Edgy techno groove from the Electric Razor sessions '93

Razor

The Roland Stoves (aka The Interzone amongst other monikers) were pioneers in the techno, electronica and ambient scenes from the early 90's. Many recordings were made during the period '91 - '96, and at least three albums, several eps and a full length promo video were completed, but nothing received a general release. 

In the end only a few demos ever made it out of their Moonbase Alpha studio, mainly handed personally to contemporary artists like Aphex Twin, Orbital, The Shamen, The Orb, Drum Club, Eat Static, Coldcut etc. and a multitude of techno DJs. 

It seems that the diversity of styles that were being output made for an unlikely fit with the various labels of the time. A possible release on Aphex's Rephlex imprint was not mutually agreed, Mighty Force (who first issued Aphex Twin's Didgeridoo) couldn't take it all on board, Planet Dog appeared unreachable and discussions with Rob at Warp were unfortunately cut short.. Even an introduction to Novamute from Richie Hawtin led nowhere leaving The Stoves languishing in the wilderness.
