MIDNITE SPARES: COMPILED BY ANDRÁS AND INSTANT PETERSON LP/DIGI OUT 09 SEPT

On Midnite Spares, Australian music devotees András and Instant Peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. Through co-presenting weekly radio show Strange Holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. The 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3RRR and more often than not, the artists themselves.

Renowned mixed media artist Maria Kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of Trust Me, her partner Philip Brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. A recurring character in András and Instant Peterson’s investigations, Brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film Salt, Saliva, Sperm and Sweat, recorded as →↑→ (pronounced “Tch Tch Tch”).

Other links are thread under the surface. Melbourne inner north experimentalist David Chesworth explores his Australiana songcraft leading Whadya Want?. The short lived project also featured Philip Jackson, whose duo The Couch is restored from Fast Forward’s dance issue - a pioneering cassette fanzine published by early-80s 3RRR personality Bruce Milne.

The collection binds a certain musicianship that’s indifferent to fame or chart success, although some artists unwittingly experienced this before and after. Poets of the Machine’s Grace Jones techno-wave was a modest moment for Coral Island and Red Stripe, an English migrant who once celebrated a #1 UK Christmas single with an acapella cover of Yazoo, while the morbid coming of age electronics of Foot and Mouth is a lesser known prologue to Sean Greenway and Matty Whittle’s rise as legendary teen punks heroes God. Quickly becoming a modern dancefloor hit, Mumbo Jumbo’s sole release Wind It Up is only now basking in it’s brilliance.

The remaining figures shape the diversity further. There’s Sydney dub addicts The Igniters, Mix’s groovy synth song about masturbation and the Cameron Allan/Graham Bidstrup soundtrack for petrol headed ozploitation film, Midnite Spares - the compilation’s namesake.

Next up on Swedish stalwarts Trunkfunk is a 4-track EP from Toy Tonics and Normals Welcome affiliates Metropolitan Soul Museum. Hailing from London, the duo are garnering interest behind their live performances and the tight grip they have on their studio gear. Previous productions have deftly struck balance between a powerful, analogue aesthetic and a rich sense of soul and their latest ‘Klosur’ EP is no different. Out on 27th February!

Some producers regard dance music production as a way of obtaining the tools they need. Others unders- tand creation as a reflection of their vital path. Cleveland clearly belongs in the second group. When talking with Andrea about his music, it becomes obvious that the emotional circumstances that surround each track always outweigh the execution of a purely technical process. The three cuts of his second EP for Hivern were created in three different contexts, in three different periods and three different studios. But, as Andrea puts it, they're all “driven by a quest and a hope”.
 'Pay Back' was born the day before Cleveland's first live set it Brussels two years ago. No wonder it sounds like a call to arms. 'Armando The Lizard' has a much more looser feeling. It doesn't pursue an answer, just a little bit of warmth. Created in a small cold studio during the Belgian winter, it's lush and playful as a summer afternoon near the Pacific. After all, Cleveland's sound has always had a penchant for adventure. 
'Crystal Quest' is the most emotionally charged cut of the pack. With its epic vocal pads and trembling arpeggios, it creates a wistful atmosphere in which the “quest” and the “hope” that push the whole EP converge in one same direction to a highly healing effect. Andrea says it was made as a reaction to loneli- ness, but for sure it will bring a crowd together. Completing the package, illustrious swedes Samo DJ & Pedrodollar join forces to give 'Pay Back' a groove boost and a touch of their trademark quirkiness.

This spring sound is a Paul Verlaine’s poem sung by beautiful vocalist Miriam Sekhon from the band Race 2 Space, with an amazing remix treatment by Public Possession’s recent residents Andras and Super Drama. Australian musician turns Et Que Je Dorme into A Mix of Two Halves (let’s say we have a dedication to Andrew here) when Super Drama delivers four to the floor journey with Kito’s background voice becoming the lead vocal (should have happened one day). Too beautiful. Too good.
