A punk rock tale of why you should never open your door in the middle of the night….especially if you live on a spaceship. Break-neck sci-fi spoken word incantations ooze out of the mix before giving way to a desolate, terrified chorus. Imagine if Red Fang starring in Plan 9 from Outer Space and your half-way there.

In early winter I began composing what started as a simple piano solo.  Then came a friendly offer from a great cellist to play anything I would write, and so the piano solo became a duet, and from the space between emerged a theme in full orchestration.

As big fans of Max, we invited him to curate the first in Rough Trade Shops’ Behind the Counter series, in which some of our favourite artists create mixes especially for us using the records we sell on the shop floor.

The result is a 36-track compilation of soundbites, pieces of composition, interesting mixes and curious musical choices including tracks from Mogwai, Boards of Canada, Philip Glass, Aphex Twin and Low among some classical works by Rachmaninoff and Bach.

In this two-part podcast Max chats to Nigel about the process of his selection and we also hear a selection of songs from the compilation.
