Hi guys!

It's been a while since I last posted anything. It's not that I haven't been playing as much, quite the contrary. Since the opening of bars and clubs after all the corona-virus shenanigans I've been mainly focusing on dance music, playing regularly around town at commercial events and underground parties.

This is a live recording from one of my two sets I played at a mini festival around the summer solstice at Turku UG. Thank you so much to every single person that pushed their way into the crowded room and had a boogie with me! Sweaty, sexy and hothothot. Definitely a night/gig to remember! <3

Hope you enjoy it, a lot of loopy, deep and partyish bangers in this one! Happy about the selection myself, I think it came together pretty nicely.

From now on, this is a shared account between my two aliases Rongoā and Henri Ilmari. The latter focusing on dance music only and the first mentioned focuses more on psy-oriented events and mixtapes. Psychedelia, groovy downtempo and weird-ass ketafters music is what Rongoā is all about.

...::: Last Love Letter From Henri Ilmari :::...

Last love letters is a new series focused mainly on afterhour music. I mean, that can mean as many things as there are DJs but in this particular case we're playing minimalistic and deep house music which in itself has a lot of variety. This time it's an open series where as Mixes From The North has been solely my own little art project. So feel free to contact me through DM if you're interested, even though it's mostly invite-only.

This mix I played couple of days ago salutes the sun that's slowly starting to warm our hearts and bodies here up north. It makes us feel vibrant, alive. The mix is also about love (surprise surprise!) lost long time ago and the feeling when you find it in yourself and others again.

A lot of vocals, a lot of grooves and great tunes. Hope you enjoy listening it as much as I did playing it.

Friends!

It's taken a while for me to get this series going as I've been busy with life. But better late than never, especially when Juho Mieto treats us with some of the best morning tunes for us to enjoy.

Juho Mieto is one of the hottest names atm in Finnish house scene. This guy always delivers, I mean always. His selections are full of different soundcapes and are rich in emotion. This time he offers us a hybrid set of digital tunes and vinyl, three tracks rolling at the same time more often than not.

Thank you Juho for playing this set, it is definitely worth listening!

The Last Love Letter from Juho Mieto

A wee warm upper from last February. I was happy to get an invitation to play in this "Panorama Bar" -stylish night.

Played my slot quite early so tried to keep it somewhat calm and collected at that point. Happy with the selection and even the mixing is quite alright.

Not too many acidy grooves in my set but that didn't seem to bother anyone. Forgot to play pretty much all of them, haha. Good times with good people, what a great night out! Thanks for the organisers and fellow DJ's I had the privilege to share the booth with.

This is a live recording of a set I played at an underground event deep in the Finnish archipelago a wee while ago. House, deep, groovy and minimal all the way baby!

The venue was absolutely mind blowing and the place was set up so on point. Felt like I had entered some sort of parallel universe where everything was a bit wonky and Andy Warholish.

Want to thank the organisers for having me and treating us with the best sound system you can think of. Mmm, the fat af low end combined with groovy bass lines was the time!

The biggest thank yous are dedicated for the people on the floor. There were many of you and the room was pretty packed all the way to the end. So thank you, you made the experience feel like a mutual journey in to the realms of underground house music where we managed to discover the whereabouts of the grooves thought to be lost a long time ago. But they were and are always there to be found, waiting you to go online and connect. But it's you who needs to go online, not your computer. Yep, exactly.

P.s a nice little surprise for the fin speaking listeners starting around 47 min or so.

Hi,

This set was recorded at really precious lil' festival we throw every year with our friend group. Always one of the highlights of my summer.

Was a lot of fun to play without any particular plan and just do whatever. So obviously I found myself sweating that little bit extra just because I thought I had driven myself to a dead end.  But somehow managed to always keep it  in somewhat consistent movement and the people dancing.

The mood is mostly happy, groovy and light. All this with the emphasis on underground tracks with deep low ends seasoned with spicy kicks when you need it.

The beginning of the mix is quite full on immediately after start and the end is just a fade out as the set was a between slot meaning I mixed myself in to another DJ's loop he made and that's how we changed at the end too.

Well, that was probably information no-one needed so let's hit the play button and let the good times roll. Yeah baby!

About the tape: Quite a few rare gems in this one and a rework of my own in the end. A journey for the dancers. Heats you up so start taking those extra layers of clothing out. 

As the Soundcloud's "earn-with-your-music" -policy and interface changed, this platform hasn't had too much to do with actually good music. It's the pre-chewed multi-produced "banger"-filled tapes that get any attention which then are reposted among "partners" aka people who repost your tracks and so on.

And if you happen to play over an hour.... Ain't nobody got time for that! Music has turned into a dopamine-inducing drug that's sole purpose seems to be a quick fix. But as anyone experienced knows, it's not about the quick fix, it's about playing the long game for maximum pleasure. You need time and energy to immerse yourself into dance music, it's not something to listen on the side. I mean, I do it all the time but if there's a mix from an artist I really look up to or I'm interested about, I wanna take a good position on the couch and totally immerse myself into that creation.

It's been like this for a while now and the same issue is destroying the dance floor culture. I mean, I haven't been around the scene for so long that I could wholeheartedly say that I've seen what it used to be. But I've been wearing a few pairs of shoes on the dance floor since 2010, always hitting the afters and having one gear: go! I spent 10 years on the floor before hitting the decks myself and as it hasn't made me any wiser (or maybe it has, who knows) at least it has given be a good foundation on what might work and what might not. 

So what I can say from my own experience is that pretty much everything has turned into... not too great. The tracks are produced as if they were meat products: nobody needs that much but somehow the shit sells.

If you're a DJ, I have some news for you. All the good music is already made, just dig deeper. And at the same, all the good music definitely hasn't been produced yet. So once again, dig deeper.

∞ Anicca // Mixes From The North Vol. 1 ∞

The Pali word "Anicca" means impermanence and it is one the three “marks” or basic characteristics of all phenomenal existence in Buddhism. It indicates that everything that is, is in constant change and nothing is permanent. Suffering in life arises when we cling in to something thinking it's for forever, denying the impermanent nature of all things.

Facing the impermanence in ourselves enables us to realise that we have no control over this phenomena of constant change and that any attempt to manipulate it creates suffering. With this insight we learn to develop detachment, an acceptance of Anicca, an openness to change, enabling us to live happily even if things don't always end up going the way we thought they would.

As one can hear, this mixtape is all about change and new beginnings, hardships of letting go and rediscovering something that got lost along the way. This piece of work is quite personal and definitely tells my story. Even though it's a bit melancholic at times, it's still full of hope and life. Just like me.

With these words of Dhamma, I wish you all the best, my brothers and sisters <3 :

“I had been in the business for quite some time already and pretty much thought that I had seen it all. All the tricks, all the gimmicks. There was nothing new anymore, no excitement. But it all changed that one night when I got to see her perform. Then I knew what real magic was.

She was a goddess sent from the heavens. Beautiful beyond words and that sparkle in her eyes was just something else. Or at least that how it felt at the time. Might have had something to do with the potions she was serving everyone just before the show. Her own mixture, she told us. Thinking back, I actually think that it was just a blend of high-grade acid and cheap grape juice. Nonetheless, it was delicious!

I can’t quite find words to describe what we who were there got to witness. It felt other-worldly. I think the best way for me to try to explain is to let you listen to this audio recording of the show that we found from Steve’s phone a few days later. He, like a lot of other people, had tried to video the whole thing but for some reason no-one’s cameras were working. Odd indeed, but as I told you already, she was really magic.

I must warn you though, this mix is like a siren song. You might find yourself coming back for this time after time after time. But who knows, it might just be the thing you need at the moment.”

Rarely seen on commercial clubs as I prefer a dedicated audience and safer spaces. Still not hating a good night at a club though as they've given me a lot of insights about the dance culture and the person that I am today. So I have huge respect for the club culture, let's work together to keep it alive and kicking (meaning less ketamine and no phones)!
