1 fun fact about yourself? 

My enthusiasm for music of all kinds is appreciated by people who hear me talk about it and present it through my dj’ing. That is my little super power. It provides fun for others. I keep striving to be interesting with that as best I can. 

How is everything going with you right now?

Anxiety tries to get the best of me but I still wake up and want people to gather and dance it out, hug it out, respectfully talk it out! As a very personal and shy person, I am very restless and still want to perform in front of people again as soon as it is safe to do so. Having the opportunity to create a mix for pipipi was super helpful. I hope I can connect with your followers in making them happy with this mix. The joy in making this was very therapeutic for me. Thank you. 

Any fun predictions for 2021?

I love crystal balls and the idea of seeing beyond however I treasure the moment at hand tremendously. It’s all you got so whatever move one makes today, that action potentially creates a step forward for their better tomorrow. With that said, if all goes to plan, collectively we can boogie together sooner than much later. That is my hope :)

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

As of late, my newest obsession on the decks and studio..well...just gonna mention them all up in no particular order...Fred P, Deep Creep, Matrixxman, Sleep D, Zvrra, E-Saggila, Furtive, Prince (forever!), Roza Terenzi, Francois K and Daniel Fisher’s artistry plus attention to detail in his productions.
What was your first gig? How did it go? 

It's all getting so fuzzy. Sorry. One of the earliest gigs that stands out was in 1996, dj’ing in a bookstore on a Sunday afternoon. The party was called Turntable Jazz. Felt great to spin my downtempo & soul records to a crew who were coming down and getting blazed up surrounded by books and the smell of coffee. I want to see more of that in the scene. Dance music and DJ culture should not be limited to getting crazy in a dark room. 

Describe your favorite thing to drink and how it makes you feel?

Watermelon justice with basil or mint or both will do. It’s quite an elixir that comforts my head immediately.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

People love to know what other people do and what motivates them to do so. That curiosity is special particularly when it comes to what we enjoy in sound and how it affects our daily life. Music has always been a safe go-to place. From dancing around alone at home by yourself or surrounded by people at a party, a rise in heart rate while enjoying sound offers introspective relief. I strive to make this happen as often as possible. Sharing music is the best cosmic medicine there is. 

What do your parents think about the music you make?

My parents were party people back in the 1970s so disco and finger snapping music was always playing on the turntable and radio. They always sensed I would work in the music industry somehow so they really like seeing me having genuine fun just as I did when I was young. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Less dependence on the alcohol industry. More connections with community organizations and idealism that is non corporate that are supported and suggested by attendees of dance parties. If people really want “that feeling to last” then people need to approach giving back without asking for anything in return. One idea is to not party too hard and leave the club and go straight to the streets and put trash away, help people in need get their food…. the labor of love has infinite value and impact.

Ron Like Hell - 77˚F

Hi friends,

Ron Like Hell is my favorite DJ. He's also a truly kind soul, a consistent source of inspiration, and a friend.

I met Ron at the Lot Radio several years ago, during his tenure as buyer at Academy Records. It was almost summer and already hot. I remember seeing a tall figure with a large brimmed hat cutting a dark shape in the sun, like a friendly Jordowosky character arriving with a big bag of records from the horizon of Norman Ave. His set that day was mind expanding for me, psychedelic, jamming and guitar forward, yet revealed almost nothing of the damage he could do to a club system. This is the miracle of Ron's DJing: his uncanny ability to deliver a jaw dropping plethora of sounds, between mixes and within them; to be comfortable in an enormous range of styles, and yet always true to himself. It always sounds like Ron.

Among the club memories that kept me going through 2020 was one of hearing Ron play at Wrecked, the music-first queer dance party he runs with collaborator Ryan Smith, during their Basement residency. It was a slamming journey that kept me dancing into the morning hours (the party goes to at least 6am). Memories of the club's flood lights rushing the darkness periodically throughout the night, revealing the bodies around me, locked with me in sound, became a touchstone of hope in a quiet and difficult year.

Ron approaches a DJ mix as an assemblage, aligning sound with emotion, focusing on texture to create psychedelic soundscapes, imaginative spaces for comfort and surprise spectators with an unexpected crafty transition, many of which you will hear many in his Bliss Point mix - a "light sweat / mushroom tea in the woods" vibe, in Ron's own words. Beyond this mix, you can hear Ron play monthly on his Lot Radio residency, at  the off-the-wall Pride party he will be playing this month, or find him and Ryan on the coveted cover of the latest Love Injection fanzine, celebrating their ten celebrated years as Wrecked.

There's so much I could say about Ron and his work. It's more than I can fit in a newsletter, but when we meet on one of his dance floors, I'll be glad to tell you the rest. For myself and so many other DJs in NY he has been a beacon of passion, professionalism, and a true loving-kindness, the best kept secret you could never keep to yourself.

"Created deep from the bottom of my heart respectfully for the queer community in my off kilter multi-genre inclusive style this live in one take mix includes vinyl and cdj media. Mash-ups sit near disco originals, disco sampled 90s house thumpers meet modern deep tech house
pumpers and adjacent to all that, unashamed sassy vocal house is celebrated too. I also featured a few productions by some friends near and far: a trend that I can not shake since creating mixes during the 2020 shutdown. Overall, I wanted this mix to be a version of near
perfect just as when we go out and hear DJs at the club where a perfect blend is a fortunate dream come true and also some skips or light off the beat-mixing reminds us of our beautiful mortality. Circadian rhythms are endogenous time-keeping systems that synchronize most organisms, from unicellular cyanobacterium to humans, to the external solar cycle. Since light information is the most potent synchronizing factor, biological clocks coordinate the individual’s internal physiological and biochemical processes according to light and dark cycles. The show is divided into two sets of 1 hour and the musical selection of each DJ reflects those moments: day or night. Be yourself and do your best to let go of "perfection", it just does not exist. Ride the rhythm not the cue mark. Practice with any two records and/or tracks. Play YOUR beat in the mix, your friendships and with life in general. Less surrender to being salty may not be so cool these days but it will welcome a more patient attitude with yourself and help those that you love.

about the mix:
after playing some power hour time slots of slamming techno, I decided to share a thawing of the frost style deep techno mix to reflect the expansion of the soil as it warms with more sunlight allowing late winter flowers to bloom. A few tracks included here feature some producers that hooked me up with amazing music and tracks I purchased to support and uplift their amazing talent. For podcasts I do not approach the mix as a club gig but more as heady backroom bliss out hang with a little sass. With 30 years of djing in numerous countries, Ron Like Hell has no intention of doing anything else in their lifetime. They produce queer centered events in NYC both solo and as part of the dj duo Wrecked. Ron’s support of young artists in the music industry is unquestionably genuine as they have shared their spotlight with djs in their radio show and parties. Hard to pin as dj of one particular genre is not a concern to Ron. With 26+ years of record store experience their excitement for music goes deep appreciating many genres which provide infinite inspiration. They still love programming their music for a single genre dance party. Indulging such events is in no way an obstacle or compromise. For Ron, it is similar to painting with oil instead of acrylic. There is no intention of being the greatest dj championing specific one or two genres as they prefer to be known as an eclectic dj that reads the room as best they can. Being so eclectic doesn't seem to prohibit their appeal from techno, disco and house music forward bookings..if anything it has increased their recognition and respect from some of the world's best parties and venues. A few of the most notable spaces are Panorama Bar, Lab.oratory and Ost (Berlin), Dekmantel Selectors, Draaimolen (Netherlands), Sustain-Release, Honcho Campout and residencies at Basement and Nowadays in the NYC area. Their creativity has even been immortalized on physical media with a dj mix on a one-sided vinyl accompaniment to Baxter Dury’s 2024 album, “I Thought I was Better Than You” and a mixtape for Mister Saturday Night Records MSN Tape series Their role in the industry is undeniably unique and influential.

Campout Series: Ron Like Hell

Mixed live for PRIDE 2020 Sound Of New York livestream on The Lot Radio. Our virtual dance-a-thon was a fundraiser for The Okra Project, Black Trans Travel Fund, For the Gworls, Black Trans Femmes in the Arts, Trans Women of Color Survival Fund, G.L.I.T.S. Inc., New Alternatives and some of the streaming artists that needed financial assistance due to the nightlife economy being shut down. LGBTQ+ community from around the planet often travel to NYC specifically for Pride so we highlighted a wide assortment of local area talent to show the world a diverse appreciation of beats and expression. Collectively, it came together far easier than we thought especially during an unprecedented era therefore a tremendous thank you to @thelotradio for hosting everything, Good Room & Elsewhere for the live remote access and use of their DJ equipment, every single DJ and collective for their art of the mix and last but not least YOU for supporting not only your faves but also contributing to very important causes throughout the "party". Black Trans Lives Matter everyday. Without blind love for one another we simply fail to do more for our rights, our extended Q+ families and the next generation of free belief spirit.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I have been a music enthusiast since age 9 (playing violin then tenor sax), bought records with my weekly allowance every Friday night when I was a kid. Loved seeing DJs in the 80s but a visit to NYC in 1990 changed my life after hearing the city's DJs "say" different things with their records which were all non-top 40 tunes. A big door opened and I went through never looking back being eclectic as possible.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I moved to NYC in March of 1998. After 8 months, I became an employee of Satellite Records selling records to every dance music head that rolled through the city. It was both fun and very hard work. After 2001, retail struggled hard so I worked part time jobs at other record shops while I sold records online and did my best to play music I owned that people wanted to hear in the non-loving house music days pre-2009. Stuff like obscure synth, rare disco, italo, ebm and psych rock were my go-tos to play but I still collected house records even if they were just for me to enjoy. In 2009 I partnered with a buddy as a DJ duo then later we named ourselves Wrecked in 2011, a major left turn of a party for the NYC gay/queer nightlife scene which I never had an opportunity to play for. Being accepted by that community truly helped me feel like I finally gave something back to the city that taught and continues to teach me so much.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. The mixes on Juanita's are a great example of Brooklyn's finest and friendliest DJs. Since the series was launched, many of the mixes are helping me through these heavy modern times so I wanted to give back what those mixes gave me which is comfort and joy.  My approach was to include bumping, patient, soulful, dubby and trippy music. Something to help you relax yet dance nice and easy to...or get your head nodding, raising the volume as you chill with your friends on the couch. I had a wonderful time making it so a tremendous thank you for asking me to contribute.
