415. Seamless Transitions of Time

In a seamless transition of time
Yet another birthday has passed,
An uncelebrated calibration,
A notch, as it were, on the staff
Of life, but fainter and fainter
By the year than the earlier
Ones impressed of youth;
And in this mellow age of mine
With dimming sight and senses
But of clearer vision by far,
What do I see, but the same
Smallnesses newly defined
In clear confusions of our time.
There is truly no thought original,
No passions unfelt, no tears
More specially wept than the ones
Of mankind in all its history;
No wounds, no scars more oozing
Or unhealed than the ones revealed
In timeless repetition of man’s follies;
No joys more celebrated or better
Rejoiced, no triumphs or victories
Sweeter intoned in stentorian voices
Than the ones over the ages,
Whispered by mothers at a crib,
Or lovers in enthused embraces.
Amused with chide and recollection 
Of the long and winding  life of mine,
I await the cast of my Maker’s line,
To end the seamless transitions of time!
