I haven't uploaded on here in ages.
This is what happens when I'm stuck in Covid quarantine for 5 days after getting out of the hospital a week before that. It's been a fun October! I like jamming to loops. It helps build up my timing. Something happened to my left hand just before all the shit hit the fan so I'm trying to get my strength back in my middle finger. 
It's totally mindless stuff. Enjoy!

CV Chill - Ronny Jones

A track i put together while testing some plug-ins. The solos are a split of a Friedman BE and the OVox plug-in from Waves. It's a very cool plug if you want weirdness. That's all I've used it for so far. 
I programmed Slate drums along with EZKeys. Also played some sketchy bass with my Jazz Bass... and guitars too.

IsoNation OVox Mix

I just found this track I did with Steven Ray Anastos about 20 years ago. I was just getting into computer recording at the time. It's a pretty dark subject matter. It hit close to home at the time. The weird phone voice was a crazy guy that lived across the street from my apartment. I had a Radio Shack scanner that picked up those early 'hands free' phones. I heard a lot of sketchy stuff on that scanner!! That guy's phone call was too good to pass up. The cops would show up often at his place at 4am to get him to stop playing his keyboard at full volume with his garage door open. Anyway.... it made for good art! 
I always like this track because it was very different from what Steven and I wrote with Black Bambi.

I started writing this type of music in the early 90s. There was a radio program call Hearts of Space that was one very late Sunday nights in Los Angeles. I would try to stay up just the hear it. It inspired me to write/create these pieces. I use them for progressive relaxation. If you're stressed out I suggest trying it. It really helped me a lot.

Climbing Candles by Molotov Grasshopper

25 years ago I was fortunate to produce this band from Columbia Missouri.
My friend Carter (He singed Black Bambi and singed/produced/wrote countless records for a shit ton of artists - look him up) signed MG back in 1995 to Island Records. 
Much like Black Bambi, their record was never released. It was finished, mixed, Mastered and artwork was created. Just before it was to be released Island records cleaned house and fired it's A&R staff and dropped all the artists they'd signed. The record business can be brutal!

I remembered that I had saved a backup of the ADAT Multitrack tapes. My lifelong friend Dave Casey recently asked if anyone needed ADAT's dumped to digital. I jumped at that chance not knowing if the tapes were even going to have survived several moves and years in a garage! 
Thankfully they survived! 
In the last few months as time permitted I have stared to remix the album. Technology has advanced a lot since 1995! 
I've been able to remix the songs and get the band sounding the way I heard them in my head. For musicians and engineers, you know what I mean.
The great thing for me has been to re-live some of the magic that was created all those years ago. The band was very young. They hadn't had their asses kicked by the business yet! It was still fun and new! I had them doing all kinds of crazy shit. "Let's run a mic out to a dumpster and bang on it"!!!  They we game to try anything. And so was I! 
From the start I became a fan. They had a unique vibe to them.
I will share more about them later... I could go on for days... 

This song by Amy Wilson gave me chills when she cut the intro. I asked her to add harmonies to it and it became like a twisted Disney nightmare. (In a really cool way). This was a real band effort. It's one of my favorites. It's a good headphone song.
By the way, the record was mostly recorded in a house in beautiful Clairemont! (San Diego) Directly across from the Clairemont Square. 

They gave me permission to share some of what I've been working on. 
My hope is that they will do like Black Bambi did and release the record on their own. 

I didn't play anything on this. 
I produced, engineered and remixed.

Another EPIC song from Molotov Grasshopper. 

When we first tracked this song the A&R rep Carter suggested adding strings. I loved this idea... the band... not so much. After the band flew back home to MO. I hired a couple local string players. A cello and a violin. I had them record their parts 4 times to build it up. NO SAMPLERS.  
I think the band is ok with it now. At the time they were so accustomed to hearing it one way. I completely understood that at the time.
Honestly, I think it adds to the mood of the songs. It's very dramatic sounding. Who doesn't love a waltz about Everything Dying? 
We cut the basic tracks (strings & dumpster too) at Signature Sound (U2 tracked there) in beautiful Kearny Mesa (San Diego)with Mike Harris engineering. Overdubs were done at Marty's house.  
I Love this song. It's very powerful. After you hear it once it sticks. Great hook. 
I am so proud of this record! 
Let's get it released to world!

Everything Dies - Molotov Grasshopper

Dab Of Red - This is one of my favorite MG songs. It's very powerful. 
 
     When we were tracking it I wanted to get the melody at the beginning somehow. One day Tony was messing around with the piano that was in the living room. I thought 'Play the melody with Amy quietly singing like it's a demo' I quickly set up a mic in the room and tracked it. You can hear a dog barking and if you listen super close a phone rings just as the song starts. I live for those magic moments!  
     Dave Spangler (drums) played his ass off on this one. I would pick him up at the place the band was staying in the mornings and we'd work on parts. It was so much fun to see his face when I'd push him to step out of his comfort zone. He'd hear the playback and feel so pumped! That's why I love making records. Just going for it! Sometimes you fall on your ass... when you don't.... it's worth it!

Molotov Grasshopper - Paralyzed 

Another great track from the Molotov Grasshopper album. 
My hope with the entire record was to make each song have it's own life. 
This one has a lot of moving parts. On the tag I had Ben lay down (John Lennon style). Why? Why Not! I wish we iPhones back then to shoot some video. This song is so powerful. Ben's beautiful voice against the dark lyrics gave me chills when he cut the lead vocal. 
It shows the depth of this band. They were not just another 'Grunge band'. Not even close.

Paralyzed - Molotov Grasshopper

Spin Another - When i first heard this song I knew why Carter signed the band. He was all about lyrics and the hook. And 'hook' not in a cheesy way. Although, he did write 'Incense and Peppermints'.
I love the bridge on this one because it changes colors then drops into the abyss. When Amy and Ben sing together it's magic. 
It is like a film in a song form. That's always been my approach to music. I want it to sound 'cinematic' so it takes you on a sonic journey.
The whole band really worked hard on this track and it shows. 
Amy's vocal just kills on this song. Lot's of emotion. 
I find this songs get's stuck in my head often. 
I hope it stick in yours too! 

I've heard from the band and they are looking into releasing the album sometime soon.  
I will keep you posted. 
In the meantime TURN IT UP!
