The dynamic new collection is built around previously unheard tracks created by Illa J’s brother: the late, great J Dilla (James Yancey). With Frank Nitt’s standing as J Dilla Music Catalog Curator and the official approval of Yancey Media Group, all productions on Sunset Blvd originate from The Lost Scrolls — the stunning cache of beats Dilla left behind.

With its rapturous single “Quicksand” featuring Common, Sunset Blvd also teams Yancey Boys with De La Soul’s Posdnuos (“Beautiful”), The Pharcyde’s SlimKid3 (“Rock My World”), and T3 of Slum Village (“Jeep Volume”), making it clear that the Dilla legacy is being represented by those who knew and collaborated with Dilla in his lifetime. Additional guests on Sunset Blvd include DJs Rhettmatic, C-Minus, and JRocc (Beat Junkies) as well as rap roughneck Guilty Simpson and R&B strongman Eric Roberson. “We’ve created an album that would make Dilla proud,” says Frank Nitt, who grew up with Dilla in Detroit. “But this isn’t a nostalgia trip: Dilla’s beats were so future-forward that they’re right on time in 2013, and we’ve assembled the best artists possible to represent that.”

In the vein of the classic, timeless, and golden era of Soul music, Aaron Abernathy, professionally known as Ab is relighting the torch and paying homage to the 7 inch vinyl record 45s with his “A” and “B” side project entitled "45 Series, Vol. 1."  

An ode to the classic 7-inch record culture, this collector's item consists of an upbeat A-side record produced by long time collaborator Black Milk. “Stop Fakin’” features a strong lead vocal from Ab, coupled with Funkadelic-like background vocals. The contrasting B-Side is reminiscent of greats like Donny Hathaway, Isaac Hayes, and Curtis Mayfield, who were known to orchestrate masterpieces without singing a note; leaving the instruments to speak freely. “Stevie’s Lament” is an ethereal composition written by Ab on behalf of his close friend and is a poignant expression of the pain of losing both life and love in one fell swoop.  Fitting in its format, its melody portrays a pain that is, in its nature, beyond words.

Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album's foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm "mashup" album.
