Rootikal Radioshow #102 - 30th November 2023

A mix to showcase the precursor era to the digital steppas scene that is so popular with the youth in the UK and Europe today. The late 80s, 90s and early 2000s were a deeply creative transition period in the music with the arrival of digital studio equipment and the many different musical styles that began to influence the sound of reggae music. It's also important to highlight the subject matter explored in the songs with topics such as poverty, mental health, love, gang violence, drug use and of course spirituality. Also included a few of our favourite obscure B side grooves.
Amongst some of the tracks included..
Starting off in 1982 with Prince Lincolns - one common need. A beautiful track highlighting the fundamental and basic right to food clothing and shelter for all human beings. 
Straight into 1987.. Vivian Withers hard hitting anthem- Hanging on. A dark and epic description of battling with depression, unemployment and alcoholism within the context of 1980s working class England.
Jumping forward to 2008 Ras Nytos- Yu Talent. He encourages us to battle with low self esteem and dig deep to find our talents and show them off to the world.
Jumping back in time to 1990 Blacka T - Ethiopian calling. A ruff and tuff spiritual excursion on the drum song riddim with deep melodica piece from Pablo on the B side
Onwards in the mix we hit 1988 uk release by Peter Bouncer and the offbeat posse - Rough neck sound. Peter extolling the virtues of his rough neck sound inna conscious dancehall stylee, with a wonderfully wobbly bass line, a version with all the hall marks of Jah tubbys in the mix.
Finishing up with the Prophets - Streets of pure gold (year unknown) A rare digi excursion on the yabby you label. A wicked recut of the gladiators classic.
This mix was recorded live from vinyl 45s on a single deck therefore expect sound quality variations. Enjoy
