Devin Morrison aka Man-Like-Devin is a songwriter, guitarist and collector of Jamaican music born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. In 1999 he co-founded Los Angeles roots-reggae group The Expanders. They spent the next decade playing in and around the L.A. area as part of the city's then-thriving ska, rocksteady and early reggae scene. During that time they also performed throughout California as the backing band for many of their Jamaican musical heroes including Alton Ellis, Leonard Dillon of The Ethiopians, The Wailing Souls, The Maytones, Pat Kelly, Roy Shirley, Stranger Cole, Prince Jazzbo, Willi Williams, The Cables, and Winston Jarrett. 
The Expanders released four studio albums from 2011-2018, the latter two of which debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Chart. During that time Morrison also teamed up with longtime friend DJ Hoppa and emerging Las Vegas MC Dizzy Wright to release a tune entitled "Vampire Bite." 
In 2018 Morrison and The Expanders parted ways on friendly terms. He began writing a solo acoustic record and teamed up with long-time friend Roger Rivas (The Aggrolites, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Jason Mraz) to record it. At one of these initial sessions in the fall of 2018 Rivas mentioned to Morrison that the guitar position in Long Beach Dub All Stars might be vacant. With Rivas’s endorsement Morrison played a try-out show with LBDA in Denver, CO and soon afterwards joined the group as an official member. Devin played guitar on half of the songs on their 2019 record Long Beach Dub Allstars. He also contributed his original song “Higher Rank” to the album, and co-write the song “Youth.” 

Man-Like-Devin’s first acoustic solo record Wheel And Shoulder: Acoustic Reggae, Rocksteady & Ska (Rootfire Coopearative) was recorded at Rivas Studios and Man-Like Studios from October 2019 to October 2020. It is a completely acoustic album with no electric instruments that features Morrison’s GRAMMY-nominated brother Patrick Morrison on upright bass, banjo and lead acoustic guitars, Devin’s father Tom Morrison on harmonica, and The California Honeydrops.

MAAD T-RAY - Babylon Drugs [Rootfire World Premiere]

Stick Figure is the project of Santa Cruz, California-based producer Scott Woodruff. Lumped into a genre dominated by Reggae-Rock bands, Woodruff earned worldwide acclaim by incorporating lower tempo chillout music with elements of Jamaican dub and reggae.

Noted through his restrained vocals, multi-layered arrangements, and heavy riddims, Woodruff independently released four albums between 2006 – 2010 including The Sound Of My Addiction (2006), Burnin’ Ocean (2008), Smoke Stack (2009), and The Reprise Sessions (2010), each winning numerous year end awards and praise from the scene’s most influential blogs and tastemakers. Despite combined album sales topping 50,000, Woodruff veered away from touring in support of the recordings and settled into a reclusive lifestyle- traveling the world for over half a decade and living on the album royalties.

The release of 2012’s Burial Ground invoked a sea change in the producer, who began to embrace the demand to play live shows, establishing a touring band made up of Kevin Bong (KBong) on keyboards, Kevin Offitzer on drums, and bassist Tommy Suliman, fronted by Woodruff on guitar and lead vocals. The quartet headlined their first national tour in 2014, and on the back of multiple advance sell out shows, Stick Figure reached bona fide headliner status throughout North America and the Pacific Islands.

In 2014, Woodruff moved to a mountainside farm outside Santa Cruz, CA. As his housemates experimented in beekeeping and tincture making Woodruff found solace excavating a foundation and constructing a recording studio on the farm, all in preparation for his most ambitious recording to date, Set In Stone (to be released November 13, 2015).

The release of Set In Stone is a culmination of a journey that has seen the producer go from a mysterious figure to becoming a major player and virtually inventing a melodic subgenre of reggae that finds inspiration from midtempo electronic music.

I close my eyes and I'm there, on tour with one of the bands that helped start this whole thing. Three guys pumping power and life into thousands of moving bodies. Swarms of beautiful girls swaying. I always dreamed of life on the road. Sweat. Summer. Sex.

My mind flashes. The Green takes the stage. These harmonies are mind-bending. The beat- hypnotic, pulsing. I'm so lucky to be part of this magic.

I open my eyes and head tilted back, I soak up Pepper's new single, "Start You Up" (The Green Version). I finally get my fix. Their 2013 self-titled album kept me pushing forward and since then I've been waiting for someone to take me back. I had been out of the game for two years when I was reintroduced to the scene by two of Hawaii's biggest powerhouses.

Pepper and The Green made me remember why I do what I do. I had forgotten the sound of laughter in a green room- what it's like to travel the country with close friends. They taught me how to tour again.

My gratitude is palpable as I groove to this track. Pepper has teamed up with The Green's Brad Watanabe to create something crisp and fresh, new yet familiar. Something indescribably and uniquely Pepper, with a twist of Green. It gets dirty, flowing through ambiance and dub, before being wiped clean and polished with a shine. Perhaps that's just what comes from putting these two together. IMG_6293

Brad welcomed the collab: "It was awesome to do this remix, I grew up listening to and jamming songs off Kona Town and always looked up to these guys."

As did I, as did all of my friends. Thanks for taking me back. Thanks for the memories of a time when I only dreamed of this life, and of a time when I was brought back to life through this music.
