a slow, deep, musical tribute to my experience of playing through final fantasy 14 online <3

i started playing final fantasy 14 online (ff14) around the time i was diagnosed with a life-changing illness. i was living at my mom’s in a city i’m not very fond of with a new, life-changing, potentially life-destroying diagnosis. this game brought me such desperately needed escape. playing through its story, i felt a part of something special and inspiring. i truly think ff14 has some of the best fantasy storytelling out there, including in competition with books, tv, movies, and so on. it’s also so beautiful visually and sonically and has so many important, uplifting messages. 

this mix is a tribute to ff14 soundtracks and other music i was listening to a lot during my depressing experience of 2021-2022, where i couldn’t do much other than distract myself from what i was going through. it’s the second (third?) mix in a series of ambient mixes i’ve made, with the prior being a tribute to the video game world of guild wars. cynn’s lullaby as i go by cynn both on guild wars and ff14. 

i really can’t recommend ff14 enough, although maybe play it when you are in a less busy time as there are hundreds of hours of story to play through and it is SO GOOD it can be hard to log off. it’s a massively multiplayer online role playing game, but you can basically play through it on your own and at your own pace. if you’ve played ff14 or end up playing it, please get in contact so we can screech about how iconic, and for me - life changing, its story is.

Debut hybrid mix with tasty breaks (hence the very original title) of different styles. In this hour I wanted to put together some of the tracks that inspired me the most lately. Bass, electro, ghettotech, footwork and jungle with a little latin twist.

Allergy Season alum Love Letters and label boss Physical Therapy team up to tackle new territory on Hunk. In two distinct versions, the duo explore prismatic soundscapes and gut-rattling bass.

Echoing across 13 minutes, the ‘Ouroboros Mix’ is an epic of dark dub in half-time. Layers of heady sound build and decay through the song’s several movements, while ballooning delays ricochet across syrup-thick low end. It’s a winding trip, weaving tension and release.

The pair buff things up for the ‘Herculean Mix,’ a stripped back techno interpretation, which builds Hunk’s heavy bass lines from squelch to squall. The mind-bending sound palette is glued to a breakneck 606 drum machine for a peak time potency.

Physical Therapy & Love Letters - Hunk (Herculean Mix)

As a musician with a background in experimental music and a former jazz drummer, Itaho started on the rave scene and in underground circles.
Sensitive to the “plasticity” of sound, she offers a vast but always percussive musical universe. Now a member of the Bienvenue au Club collective, she collaborates with a number of platforms, including the “Tu mixes bien... pour une fille” (You mix well... for a girl), a campaign to raise the profile of women in electronic music.

Raised in Tunis and now located in Brussels, Samar plays with atmospheric spatiality and sonic textures.

Constantly evolving her musical craft, she is not afraid to take unexpected turns and imbue vim and vigour into her transcendental yet resolute DJ sets.

Expect mixes with a metaphysical, tangible texture. From visceral ambient to blood-pumping percussions, Samar is adept at experimental bass, jungle, breaks, leftfield, and electronica. A transgressor of the traditional codes of the dancefloor. No frills, all thrills.
