Leftroom, it’s been a while...

As heralded by the Rework reworks earlier this year, Matt Tolfrey’s agenda setting subversive house/techno imprint Leftroom returns with a full relaunch and refresh. Full focus on family and nurturing a new generation of leftminded souls, the reboot starts here with London wunderkind Casey Spillman. A talented 21 year old producer who’s already amassed a sterling body of work on his own Wednezday Flavourz label and played at the likes of Fabric, Ministry Of Sound and XOYO, he’s turned in three superlative grooves to celebrate the return of one of the 2000s most definitive underground labels.

Spillman kicks off the with loose limbed ‘District Line’. Bumping with shuffled jacks, sliding with slippery space aged textures and popping with trippy humanized elements, it at once recalls Leftroom’s signature while staring defiantly into the future. It’s also complemented with a forthright slammer from Russian roustabout Tripmastaz.

Dig deeper for ‘Take Care’ where Casey reveals the warmer shades in his palette with a precision jazzy organ hook that mutates and fluctuates throughout over a bumped-out beat that’s reminiscent of the old MFF legacy, while ‘Pulled Over’ bids us adieu with subtle trippiness as rhythmic elements ricochet and flutter around a distinctive spoken word sample that in turn melts into the texture of the track itself.

Watch out. There’s plenty more Leftroomism locked in for the imminent future...

A month after their last outing on the label, Leonardo Gonnelli & Adne are back on Play It Say it with another fantastic EP that features a remix from top talent Seb Zito.  

Gonnelli has been touring the world for ten years now, with a distinctly Florentine take on house finding favour with big wigs like Adam Beyer and Sven Vath. He’s a man never far from the Beatport charts and works again here with Adne, a live outfit who bring samples, live vocals and a love of weirdness to their music. This fresh offering comes just a month after their excellent ‘Raw Grooves EP’ and brings more invention to the dance floor.  

Quick out of the blocks is ‘Is It Right’, a devastatingly funky bit of punchy house with wet bass squiggles and kicking drums that cannot fail to get you moving. Nest comes the remix from Seb Zito, the Fuse associate who has a stripped back dub tech style that is one of the hottest around right now. His version is ever quicker and slicker, with busy bass down low and knocking drums designed to get the floor pumping. Sci-fi motifs flesh it out in cinematic style.
  
The next original is ‘Girl’, another perfectly reduced track with slithering hi-hats and freaky vocal filters all tethered to a rubbery, supple groove that takes you deep into the night. Last of all, the brilliant ‘Maaya’ is minimal tech house with warped bass and tribal vocal chants. It’s a spellbinding tune that brims with restless energy and is perfect dancing material.  

These are four more exquisitely executed dance floor bombs.

Luuk van Dijk - Suavo [Dark Side Of The Sun]

Sidney Charles continues to establish his Heavy House Society label with another thrilling EP, this time from the boss himself after a standout first couple of releases from Barem & Bodeler. 

Charles does not mess about in the booth or the studio: he makes body rocking house music with rock solid drums and deft, soulful details that get clubs pumping. After years of releasing on the best labels out there - and laying down killer sets everywhere from London to Berlin and Ibiza - he is now focussed on his own project and serving up some of his best music yet. 

Sub Society is up first and is a driving house cut with punchy drum programming and an elastic bassline. Chord stabs bring a sense of warmth and colour, and this one is set to make a huge impact in the club. Raveheart then gets down and dirty, with tight drums and percussion, a rubbery bassline and the sort of tripped out pads that get you lost in the music. 

This is another high class EP from one of house music's most essential names.

Sub Society

London’s Kylin Tyce teams up with the Tessellate crew to release four slick, 2-step tracks including a remix from Moodswing label boss Perception. London based Kylin Tyce is a new artist on the circuit with an ear for ambient soundscapes, rolling beats and intricate percussion. His sound takes inspiration from the realms of early UK Garage paired with forward-thinking House & Techno which can be heard on his releases on labels such as Oldivibes, PIV and Render. You can either find Kylin behind the counter at the London record shop Phonica or playing regularly at clubs in and around the capital where he aims to take you on a journey through both old and new realms of electronic music whilst providing a continuous vibe to the dance floor. ‘Do Your Thing’ sees him join the London based event series and record label Tessellate following releases from artists such as T. Jacques, Alex Pervukhin, Firmin and Aleksandir. On the flip, ‘Thinkin’ fuses nostalgic, stripped back, UKG stylings with uplifting keys, jubilant tones and an inviting vocal line.

The first release in the Rendr vinyl series, A humble moment for the label. Welcoming two highly regarded artists to the imprint who join together to use both their individual signatures and joint abilities to produce two originals that ooze inspiration and soul. Both originals blend warm melodic elements and rhythmic bass lines along with hypnotic leads, all coming together to form the ideal opening for the first release. On the flip side, Peruvian composer Alejandro Cuestas & Argentina’s Kevin Toro take the baton and implement their own touch on the originals to produce some hard hitting yet fundamental grooving records.
