What No One Sees

George Beaumont worked as a steel forger, who resided in Owlerton. He was born around 1854, and died at the age of 23 on Christmas Day 1877. He enjoyed playing football, and was a member of the Owlerton Broughton Football Club.

On Christmas Day, along with his brother James and other friends, George Beaumont was playing football on a field that at the time was used by the contemporary St. Philip’s Club. However, when retrieving a ball, he climbed a wall and fell to his death on the other side.

Ernest Hides grew up in Sheffield where, during his teenage years, he worked as an apprentice printer. In 1913 at the age of 21, he left his home and family for a new life in Australia. Upon arrival he continued his trade settling in Leichardt near Sydney. However, less than a year later the First World War broke out and Ernest enlisted with the 4th Battalion Australian Army.

It is quite possible that Ernest was among those who hoped that they were sailing to Europe where they might at some stage be reunited with their families.  However this wasn’t to be and, after spending three months in Egypt, his Battalion arrived in Gallipoli where they fought in the Battle of Lone Pine, a diversionary attack on the entrenched Turkish position and one of the most famous of the Gallipoli campaign. Records suggest that Ernest was killed some time between the 6th and 9th of August 1915.
