A Lil' Waltz

These chords have been constructed by layering and transposing the frequencies of various birdcalls. The resultant microtonal harmonies bring out their own unpredictable movement through interference patterns and subharmonic frequencies, creating a rich sonic palette.

Resonances

Inspired by the horror film Midsommar (2019), ‘The May Queen’ is a social commentary on how oneself can slowly lose their identity and values in pursuit of a false sense of belonging. We can sometimes be so afraid of being an outcast to the point where we desensitise ourselves to the horrors happening around us ; even turning a blind eye to blatant inequality and brutality in order to avoid being marginalised. I find myself reacting to the horrors that have unfolded before us in 2020 and I hope that we think about the power of our voice and work towards the future we would like to create for our children.

Situ Koku (Folk song arr.) DEMO

This piece, for flute, piano, vibraphone and string quintet, was inspired by the journey through a glow worm tunnel in the Blue Mountains. Inside the tunnel, viewers must be still and silent, in complete darkness, in order to catch a glimpse of the tiny pin-pricks of life. ‘Luminosa’, whose title is derived from the worms’ scientific name arachnocampa luminosa, captures this fragility, inviting the audience to become immersed in the stillness of the tunnel, and to take a closer look at the intricate details of the glow worms themselves.

Welcome Stranger was the biggest gold nugget found in Australia. Today, the place it was found stands as a ghost town. Kinda sad.

An Improvisation between lifetimes.

Dysmetropsia

This piece is written for flute, oboe, two horns and four hand piano. “Objects and Space” explores the concepts of sound and silence. In the piece I attempt to represent “objects” as blocks of sound and use silence to represent the “space” between these sound objects. The first and final section have very obvious sound objects with all the instruments playing in unison and clear moments of silence. In the middle section, the lines are blurred, and the silence is not as distinct. In this section, the silence exists in the individual voices, but they are no longer in unison. This allows for different combinations of sound and silence to be explored.

Lost And Found

Pearls was written as part of the soundtrack for the Sydney Festival show Dorr-e Dari: A Poetic Crash Course in the Language of Love. The work takes the sounds of traditional Persian instruments and the bells of Persian cows and transforms them into extended ambient drones.
