Post Tangsgiving

Composed/improvised upon hearing the passing of Palden Gyatso la, former Tibetan political prisoner who was tortured in Chinese prison in Tibet in 1959-1992 for leading fellow Tibetan monks protesting against China's colonization. He passed away on Nov. 29, 2018, in Dharamsala, India. This photo was taken a few months before. It was my first time to meet him. We were outside the UN headquarters in NYC at a protest against Chinese government's genocides against the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongols and Hong Kongers. It was pouring down the rain. We huddled under a couple of umbrellas, Palden la held my hand firmly for a long time with his very skinny but very strong hands. We didn't speak much but I felt his spirit very pure strong and warm. That was also my last time to see him.

The title of this piano piece, "The Journey", was inspired by black American musician and poet Larry Roland's poem, "The Journey".

Call To Arms

I composed and played this on the 63rd birthday of the late Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo. His first name Xiaobo means "ripples in the morning". His ashes were buried at sea, as imposed by the Chinese government that convicted and jailed him for years. He died of liver cancer in police custody in July, 2017. I had interviewed him by phone from Hong Kong while he was under house arrest in Beijing, in 2003. I'm forever grateful to his involvement in Tiananmen and democratization of China.

Happy New Ear!

Rose Tang is a Mongol musician, multi-disciplinary artist, event curator, poet, journalist and activist based in Brooklyn. Her work addresses human rights abuses and the ongoing clusterfucks. She vocalizes and dances to improvised experimental music, plays electric guitar, keyboards, piano, drums, percussion. Her spoken word performances also include solo drum vocalization that features her improvised rants, classical Chinese poetry and Daoist texts. 

Tang was born and raised in Southwestern China, and studied visual art and took part in underground rock music scenes as a teenage art student in Sicuan. She's a fourth generation artist in her family. Tang worked as a journalist and radio documentary maker in Australia, Hong Kong and China for 12 years and was Ferris journalism teaching fellow at Princeton University before returning to art in 2010. She plays in more than 30 bands in New York and Seattle, and performs regularly in Brooklyn where she lives. 

She's been a social commentator on mainstream and social media. Rant, chant, sculpt, paint, play. It's all sideshows in a big show.
