'Taste of You' is a song about the boundaries between friendship, love and love lost. Though partly inspired by my own life, much of the song is based on Connell and Marianne's relationship in 'Normal People'. I found the onscreen portrayal of their romance so beautiful and touching that I couldn't help but write about it. My hope is that 'Taste of You' conveys something of that beauty; of bittersweet tenderness and the inextricable connection that lovers share.

It's true, nobody here is sane. 

I wrote and recorded this song at home during the summer, on GarageBand. It's about the madness inside us all, and also how the world is pretty darn crazy! You know that line from Alice in Wonderland? "We're all mad here"...

I've had numerous encounters with people one might label 'crazy'. In fact, there's a little voice memo layered in at the end of the song that I recorded many years ago, of a strange stranger yelling on a bus in London. I think at the time I was kinda spooked. I have vivid memories, too, of a time when I was much younger, walking with my mum past a cafe where a man was literally picking up and throwing the tables and chairs. People fled, crossed the street, leaving their meals behind. 

But the encounter that stands out to me most was more recent, when I was in New York with my dad. After a morning of indulgence, we were sat in a park stuffing our faces with these delightful bagels. And then this man, who was probably totally off his head, walked past, looked me right in the eye and muttered "greedy f*king pigs" (or something along those lines). 

It was pretty harsh, sure. I could have written him off as a nutcase. But it also struck a chord, because there was a deeper truth beneath his callous words. There we were, living it up in the big city - and yet all around us, camped beneath high rise buildings and curled up in dingy parks were scores of homeless people. Many appeared to be drug addicts, others were missing limbs. It was a deeply disturbing, unsettling contrast: walk down one street full of ridiculous designer shops, and on the next you pass someone with torn clothes yelling curse words into the void, crossing the road at a red light on a makeshift wheelchair. 

NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS NORMAL! It's insane that we've become so desensitised to the suffering right on our doorsteps. It's insane that we just go on, without a care. I think most people are terrified to fully recognise the pain around them. I know I am. But it's not going anywhere unless we take action and do something about it. We have to face the madness head on.
