The legendary Cuban pianist / bandleader / composer Ramón "Bebo" Valdés used to say, el día que me muera, no quiero lloradera. Que toquen una rumba, que tomen ron y coman chocolate, y que toquen mi música más bailable. The day I die, I don’t want weeping. Have a rumba, drink rum and eat chocolate, and play my most danceable music. 

Bebo passed on March 22, 2013 at the age of 94, and to honor his memory in high spirits, Afropop Worldwide producer Ned Sublette travels to the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival for an exclusive presentation: highlights from the historic Rumba Para Bebo – part concert, part memorial, part Cuban jazz jam, part rumba, and part Kongo ceremony. 

The show features Bebo's son and former pupil, the reigning grandmaster Cuban pianist / bandleader / composer Jesús "Chucho" Valdés and the Afro Cuban Messengers, and with special guests Jerry González, Omar Sosa and Malongo, Mayra Caridad Valdés, Lázara Cachao, Javier Massó “Caramelo,” Javier Colina, Mauricio Vallina, Paloma Manfugás, Eladio Reinón, David Pastor, and more!

Having written the song only a few days after arriving in Boston, it made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be, and excited for what is to come. I hope you enjoy our song!

This track was recorded live from my iPhone when Brandon McCune made a guest appearance at my weekly Sunday jam at Cleopatra's Needle. We had never played together before and upon asking what ballad he likes to play for a vocalist he unknowingly chose one of my favorites, "Tenderly". This is a rare instance where I am just singing and being accompanied by the incredible Brandon McCune on piano.

But how have American jazz masters addressed the African ancestry of their music? On this Hip Deep edition, jazz historian Lewis Porter tells the early story of finding the African spirit in Duke Ellington's "Jungle Nights In Harlem" and exotic Africana in the era of Jim Crow. Author Ingrid Monson sheds light on how innovators like Max Roach and Art Blakey channeled Africa in the civil rights era. Poet Amiri Baraka, founder of the Black Arts Movement, talks about jazz as a weapon for change. Pianist Muhal Richard Abrams gives us the experimental sound of the AACM that, through its transcendental "Great Black Music," shattered prevailing ideas of jazz and improvisation. Finally, pianist Jason Moran re-imagines Africa in jazz's present and future with his composition "RAIN." Produced by Simon Rentner.
