So: The Labyrinth 2018

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.

As an electronic music artist, @petervanhoesen needs little introduction.

A techno veteran renowned for his innovation and creativity, Peter has spent his career balancing the cerebral and the physical, in line with his ethos of producing ‘mental body music’. Most recently, his musical inspiration has come from the halcyon days of the Belgian electronic music scene in the 1990s. This new focus was the result of a period of self-reflection for Peter, in which he determined that the mental side was starting to outweigh the physical in both his own music and within segments of the wider techno scene. To bring the balance back, he started the Center 91 label, and upped the urgency, groove and BPMs of his world-spanning DJ sets.

Patterns of Perception 50 is a snapshot of Peter’s refreshed, idyllic vision of techno, an intricate tapestry of visceral psychedelia and compelling rhythms. It perfectly captures and illustrates the balance of mind and body music that has been the cornerstone of his work to date.

Dettmann is one of the definitive figures of contemporary German Techno. One of the most iconic performers to grapple with the current standing of Techno music, one needs to review all of the experiences that have placed Dettmann in this position as the spokesperson for the German dance scene. From his first experiences as a record seller in the former East Germany of the late 1990s, to being the go-to representative of Berlin's legendary Hard Wax record shop, he was also resident DJ at the famed club, Berghain. Dettmann has been there at every key moment in the history of German Techno.
Crude, hard, and with no sense of the taboo, Dettmann's mystique is still always shrouded. A living force of the vertical, direct, brutal aesthetic that's proved transcendent around the world, he's been chosen to remix Moderat, Junior Boys, Fever Ray, Ellen Allien, Clark and even the emblematic Laibach in the era after industrial music. His mixes for labels like Fabric, Music Man, and Berghain, are proof of the versatility that always arrives and crushes, upward, with an authentic aesthetic that's timeless and guided by a practical intuition flowing ever forward.

Unlike so many of his peers, Northern Electronics founder Anthony Linell is no flashy DJ. His MO is subtle: let the techno do the talking. Bassiani Podcast 80 sits somewhere between mysterious assembly line and dystopian anthem. Slick and unrelenting.
