We found this demo in a self-storage facility in London (along with some others which will be uploaded too). The beginning of the track featured some spoken notes from Mike which we have transcribed here as to not interfere with the track.

“…I don’t even know who sent me this, It just arrived in the post one day. No return address, no date, nothing. It’s weird because we never recorded shows and there were never really any bootlegs floating around either.
Judging by the sound It could have been anywhere from '85-'90…However, the more I think about it the more it reminds me of a specific time in the life of Mike Beer. A time in your life when years don't matter. Just the music and people you're with. I think the whole DAHBNTU crew were there. I think Generous James and Jacques were even on stage with us.
I have a feeling it was a live show at a speedboat race or something. It was defiantly an outdoor show and there was water and boats….it could have been after a speedboat race….but it was defiantly a really small one, it was just like a mission on Vice City (laughs). I remember it being really hot with just enough mist in the air to taste the heat, it was the perfect song for the perfect summer night.
We weren't even supposed to be playing and when I got the call about the show we were in the studio rehearsing this song, we decided to take it with us and play what we could. We knew that we'd just keep it really simple. It turned out being one of the best jams we ever did.
I think we had midi keyboards hooked into laptops for some reason (maybe one of Generous James' ideas)
Unfortunately, after the show, we all had to go our separate ways, and never really managed to get back together, but I guess this is the last song that Mike Beer ever made“

The Madding Crowd is the central movement of A Story Within A Story, my collaboration with Carrie Mae Weems, which reflects upon the persistent struggle for civil rights in the United States. Carrie’s powerful video takes us through the passing of history from one generation of women to the next, narrated by Weems, followed by a collage of found footage of civil rights gatherings and protests from 1963-1974. Carrie’s self-shot film of her solo impromptu performance at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin ends the video portion of the work as a live dancer (or a group of live dancers) continue her performance. A Story Within A Story was commissioned by The Society for New Music with generous support from The National Endowment for the Arts and The New York State Council on the Arts.
The Madding Crowd superimposes spoken quotations and dialogue about civil rights from civil rights figures from (mostly) the early to mid 1960s over Carrie's powerful montage of video images from the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s and 70s as a gentle ostinato and slowly developing contrapuntal lines gradually crescendo. Voices include James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Dorothy Height, Shirley Chisolm, William F. Buckley, Sidney Poitier, Charlton Heston, Fannie Lou Hamer, Marlon Brando, Harry Belefonte, James Farmer, and many others.
A Story Within A Story was commissioned by the Society for New Music with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.
