As I’ve said many a time before, I’m on a bit of a mission to try every musical genre in existence. I feel like keeping my compositions ranged and unpredictable is equally helpful in the development of skills and the prevention of boredom.  This makes it pretty surprising that I’ve never tried anything particularly jazzy, as the area is a personal favorite of mine. So here’s a Jazz Quartet (piano, double bass, trumpet, drums) piece. I played all the instruments except the double bass myself (with samples mixed in throughout). As always, the first exploration of a genre is rough around the edges, but I really enjoyed writing it, and I think it turned out okay :)

More work with sound design! Creating your own sounds from scratch really helps in the communication of the raw idea you started with, and I love it. It's finally getting to warmer temperatures here in Manitoba (Canada). At night in summer, the pavement of the streets and sidewalks seem to emit this humid heat. There's no sun at night (a keen observation, I know), so it really feels like the heat is coming up from the ground, with no definite source. It's a fun climate to run in, and especially to drive in. That's more or less what inspired me to write this (hence the name, Black Heat). It's overly dramatic, I know, but I got caught up in this sort of subgenre of music that Reznor created with his score to The Social Network and Gone Girl. (See also: Steve Jobs, Nightcrawler, and the film pictured above). Hope you enjoy! :)

Those of you who have been around a while, know that I love to push my limits as a composer by writing as diversely as I possibly can. Here’s my next effort in that regard: 80s horror / scary music. The style has seen a bit of a comeback recently thanks to the brilliant score for It Follows, and more recently, the (fan-freaking-tastic) Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’. With Halloween season coming up, I couldn’t resist having a go at it. This track is 100% my own original sound design (with the exception of the background radio tuning that comes in a few times), which made it even more challenging. However, immersing myself in the film and music of that period for the last month was absolutely wonderful, and I had loads of fun writing this track! Epic Horror Synth Trailer Music - Something Wicked

'Cityscape' is the full set of 3 pieces I wrote in attempt to capture my initial impressions of city life. This is probably the most satisfied I've been with anything I've ever written, so I hope you enjoy it!

City Lights

As the name implies, this piece is about city lights, especially at dusk and dawn. Sparkling endless rows of headlights and street lamps, flashing through your windows as you drive through city streets at 3am. It rises slightly as the lights become more plentiful and iridescent. Then just as it seems to be fading out, it erupts into a whirlwind of colours, swirling through hot summer air. 

Obsessions

Considerably less 'chilled out' than the other two, 'Obsessions' is about the grueling every day races of 21st century city life. The faceless crowds and the hectic pervasive pulse. Superficially, it's about the layer of filth and grime which coats the urban core of a city (something I take a peculiar pleasure in). Individualistically, it's also about the mind's tendency to become caught up in a single idea or goal, and to pursue and reach out for it tirelessly. 

Still

This impression is one of complete stillness and calm. Specifically, it’s about the late evening when the hectic pulse finally begins to die down. More specifically yet, the experience of this time period from the rooftop of my building, where I spent many late evenings during my first weeks in Winnipeg. Thousands of lit windows, each showing tiny fragments of people’s lives. People with experiences and ambitions equally as complex and rich as your own (as an 18 year old, often moreso!). It makes you feel quite insignificant, in a relieving and pleasurable way.

Reverie

“What a wonderful song, she thought-everything was wonderful tonight, most of all this romantic scene in the den with their hands clinging and the inevitable looming charmingly close. The future vista of her life seemed an unending succession of scenes like this: under moonlight and pale starlight...”

A ‘Notturno’ (or in French, ‘Nocturne’) is a short, dreamy piece of music, usually for solo piano, that is meant to be suggestive of the night. The subtitle (scenes under pale starlight) is a sentence fragment from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘This Side of Paradise’. I read this book over Christmas break this year (my first at university), and I fell deeply in love. It’s full of naivety, sentiment and superficial beauty, but isn’t without a certain emotional sincerity, an underlying melancholy. I wanted to imitate that emotional balance in this piece. Entranced by the ‘Jazz Age’ aesthetic, I decided the best way to do this would be through a piano piece which borrowed liberally from jazz and impressionist harmonies. It was a wonderful aesthetic to surround myself with for a few months, and I hope you enjoy the result!

The art is obviously Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, which was my favorite painting through most of my childhood. I felt that this painting and Fitzgerald’s novel (and accordingly, my piece) had something in common.

Like pretty much everything I create, this track is completely free.

This piece is (obviously) about skies, especially in the Canadian prairies, my home. I wanted to capture them on a literal level (the constant shifting and evolution) and on a symbolic level (the emotions they tend to evoke, which I would describe as a humbling and melancholic awe). I knew that electronics and samples simply wouldn't cut it for a piece like this, so I was lucky enough to work with a few of my fellow students from university (named above). They donated a huge amount of time to rehearsing my piece, and even performed it at a university recital in April. You guys are amazing.

Skies (Piano Quartet)

I think ‘Blade Runner’ is rad. The new film is coming out soon, and it’s being scored by Johann Johannsson, one of the composers who is exciting me the most right now. My head was swimming with ideas, anticipating the things he could do with that magnetic Blade Runner aesthetic. At a certain point, these ideas were plentiful enough to form the basis of a new piece, and I decided to simply write it myself. The original film (as well as the novel it’s based on) center around sentience and identity in a postmodern society. They both have moments in which the world is dropped out from beneath a character, and their beliefs shatter like glass. These moments are very powerful. Hence the name, ‘Revelation’. I tried to incorporate a little of that nostalgic 80’s synth style, but Blade Runner, when it was made, was not nostalgic, but cutting edge. As such, I wanted the sound design here to be as modern and complex as I could make it. I hope you enjoy the result!

Revelation

This piece is either based off of an early childhood memory or a dream, but I can't remember which. We are in a small enclosed space, with a single window. There is a splintering wind pushing against the wooden walls. Golden sunlight filters through the leaves of the surrounding oak trees. Gradually, the wind and the light disintegrate the shelter and we're left suspended in pure space... Okay, that last bit was definitely a dream.

To try and capture this aesthetic, I recorded: wood creaking, wind through trees, wind through grass, fire, the Pacific ocean, double bass harmonics and glissandi (thanks Ilya!), lots and lots of train brakes, a thunderstorm, a kitchen chair being dragged across the floor, my stovetop kettle and a bunch of other things.

Van Gogh's 'Almond Blossom' is one of my favorite pieces of art. It was painted in Southern France in the spring of 1890, in response to a letter from Vincent's brother Theo announcing the birth of a son. The brothers were close, and the child was named after Vincent. The painting represents a surge of happiness and energy in the generally depressed life of Van Gogh, who killed himself later that year.

The jubilant awakening that is spring was the main idea behind this piece. It starts from a place of relative stasis, and slowly snowballs energy before tumbling to a messy and abrupt conclusion. 

The video is comprised of shots I took over the last few weeks. Think of it as my first (and probably last) vlog haha :)

This piece is the partner to my last track, 'Dusk'. It starts in a similar place but goes somewhere quite different.

Dawn has so much energy. The air tastes new and the hush of night blooms through a gentle buzz into the messy bustle of day. A delicate moment where emotional peace and ecstatic ambition coexist. Love it.

The visual is a composite of photos I took of Winnipeg and Montreal. Shot on a Canon G7 X, edited in Photoshop.
