Here's a spooky “project” I just completed, which started this past Halloween weekend (fitting?): Playing all the string section parts from 10 PSYCHO CUES into Logic (on my MIDI keyboard, reading off the actual score), to better learn Vienna Symphonic Library’s DIMENSION STRINGS. And to learn about “string section writing” (and composition) from the master himself, BERNARD HERRMANN!

DISCLAIMER:
I'm only trying to get these pieces to a RESPECTABLE LEVEL OF REALISM (within rigid time constraints). Not really trying to make them "as real sounding as possible," because that would take a million years (though DS sounds more "real" than any other "strings" library, to my ears!). To me, #8 “THE MADHOUSE” and #5 “THE CAR” turned out best, but who knows? The PSYCHO cue most people are familiar with is #9 “THE MURDER.”

**These appear in the order I recorded them (so they--sort of--sound better, as they go along), not how they appear in the actual PSYCHO film.

ALEXANDRE DESPLAT's "The Detonators," from HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS (Pt. 1)

This is definitely my most elaborate MIDI "orchestral covers" attempt to date, which required me to create a pretty large "template" (in LOGIC) containing the following fun mix of instruments (and divided sections): 4 Flutes (all doubling on Alto flute), 2 Clarinets, 2 Bass Clarinets, 3 Recorders, 3 Bassoons (one doubling on Contrabassoon), 6 French Horns, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 1 Tuba, Percussion (Timpani, Orchestra Bells, Vibraphone, Triangle, Bass Drum), Harp, Celeste, Piano, 16 1st and 2nd Violins, 14 Violas, 12 Celli, 8 Double Basses... And my computer didn't die! (All VIENNA SYMPHONIC LIBRARY samples, except for some percussion, which was PROJECT SAM's TRUE STRIKE 1, and SOUNDIRON's EMOTIONAL PIANO.)

I love the SOUND of this entire score (recorded in ABBEY ROAD), both its CDs (Vols. 1-2) which I happily purchased sometime over this past year. And, of course, Desplat's work is some of my favorite film music, of all time. I hope I can find the time to try another one of his pieces! Or (if I was smart), use this giant template to brew some fresh Turner tuneage, lol.
