To celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, the Rothko Chapel presents music that inspired MLK as he led the movement to transform America from separation and strife to full civil rights and social justice for all.  Tenor Jason Oby is joined by some of Houston’s leading African-American singers in a stirring program of protest songs, spirituals, and black gospel music. Further evoking the spirit of the movement, excerpts from speeches, letters, contemporary accounts, and poetry are recited to recreate the emotions and mood of the era. Jason Oby has performed as a soloist in opera, oratorio, and recital at venues throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. Dr. Jason Oby is the Interim Chairman of the Department of Music at Texas Southern University, Artistic Coordinator of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, and Director of Music at First Unitarian Universalist Church.  A reception on the plaza follows the program.

2014 Annual MLK Birthday Celebration — Take My Hand, Lead Me Home: The Music That Inspired MLK

Renowned Freedom Singer Rutha Mae Harris shared songs and stories from her experiences during the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to rousing renditions of freedom songs, Harris recalled the roles each song played in one of the most successful nonviolent movements in history.

Rutha Mae Harris became a member of the Freedom Singers at age 21. She was arrested three times during her work as a civil rights activist, spending 14 days in jail. Numerous civil rights leaders considered her voice "invaluable" to the success of the movement.

This program was presented in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, and was followed by a public reception and CD sales on the plaza.

This year the Chapel is honored to  welcome award-winning artist David Banner, Houston legend Bernard “Bun B” Freeman, musical ambassador Toni Blackman, and author and Rice  University professor Dr. Anthony Pinn to discuss the intersection of music and civil rights; Lone Star College professor Dr. Aundrea Matthews moderates the dialogue. How has hip hop contributed to the conversations on racial justice, including the Black Lives Matter movement? Do artists have a responsibility to MLK’s legacy?  Following the discussion, join a reception on the plaza featuring a cipher of local Houston artists, including Genesis Blu.

Carlos Garaicoa, artist, in conversation with Michelle Bird, curatorial assistant, department of French paintings, National Gallery of Art, and Andrea Nelson, associate curator, department of photographs, National Gallery of Art. Carlos Garaicoa Manso (b. Havana, Cuba, 1967) studied thermodynamics before his mandatory military service, during which he worked as a draughtsman. He then attended the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana from 1989 to 1994. Garaicoa takes a multidisciplinary approach in his art to address the social, economic, and political issues that affect our construction of subjectivities and understanding of the contemporary global situation. His work—which uses studies of architecture, city planning, the writing of history, and the tradition of aesthetic forms as a language—articulates a cultural criticism that debates the function of the artistic act and of intellectuals and artists as social agents in the public sphere. His work takes a variety of forms, including installations, videos, photographs, sculptures, pop-up books, and drawings. Two of Garaicoa’s gelatin silver prints with thread and pins, titled Untitled (Pier) and Velero (Ship), are in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. In this conversation, held on September 18, 2016, Garaicoa discusses his career, latest projects, and inaugural Artist x Artist residency with Michelle Bird and Andrea Nelson.

Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration

In honor of the life and work of the Rev. Dr. King, the Chapel hosted a conversation between civil rights activist and organizer Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr. and Former Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao exploring the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Dr. King, moderated by Melanie Lawson. The program featured opening remarks by Mayor Sylvester Turner and Consul General of India, Dr. Anupam Ray. This program coincided with the Houston-wide Gandhi Sesquicentennial Celebration in partnership with the Mahatma Gandhi Library-Houston.

A performance by Indrajit Banerjee (sitar) and Shantilal Shah (tabla) took place from 6:30-7pm during seating for the event. A performance by the Phillip Hall Singers concluded the program.
