It would be no exaggeration to say that 33EMYBW is one of the most original club music producers we've heard in recent years. In addition to being a talented visual artist and a bass player in the experimental band Duck Fight Goose, her solo productions are a highlight of Shanghai’s bustling underground scene—home to forward-thinking artists like Tzusing, Osheyack, Swimful and Hyph11e—moving with their own rhythmic language. She has a lexicon of drum sounds borrowed from all over the world, including tablas, bongos and mallets. As 33EMYBW, she puts together strange, multi-limbed rhythms that bring to mind images of dancing spiders and insects, something she addressed directly on 2019's showstopping Arthropods LP, released on the influential SVBKVLT label. As she says in the interview below, you basically need more than two legs to dance to her music. Maybe even eight.

Her music deals with creatures that vary from the mythical to the everyday (her first album was called Golem). On her latest record Holes Of Sinian, also out on SVBKVLT, she imagines the mostly-unknown organisms from the recently discovered Ediacaran period. It's more esoteric, atmospheric and arguably even funkier than her previous work, with Marina Herlop on one hair-raising track that you can hear in a demo version on her RA Podcast. This mix is actually a version of her live set—a favourite at influential festivals like Unsound and CTM—featuring plenty of productions from across her career in mutated and improvisational forms. I (archive + time)
all the sounds are either recorded on the 21st september 2020 or from the archive made or recorded on the 21st september between 2007 and 2019. the arbitrary number of a date serves as an archival organisation and becomes here a structrural method that opposes and modifies the intuitive memory.

II (recordings and ghosts, the dead silence)
the sounds are recorded on a walk between bethaniendamm and urbanhafen alongside the former luisenstaetischer kanal. all the recordings of that walk are either a.) traces of em-signals or b.) resonating objects (hit or bowed) found along the way (so that the listener can follow the traces of the objects during the walk).
the recording itself happened during a monday night around 3 am. in the dead silence of the night. walking around with an em-detector and hitting on things like hunting or summoning ghosts: the sounds stand out against small noises of sleeping swans, startled residents or coincidental droping seeds from trees. so listening in this regard becomes more than listening to the sound itself. the decay of each sound is looking into the nothingness of silence.
the metaphor dead-silence refers to the non-availabilty (unverfügbarkeit) of the dead that slip away into nothingness. only memories hold a connection to the gone, to the past that otherwise would be nothing, silence. a decaying sound in the dead silence of the night thus becomes a sort of bridge, channel, vehicle to the dead (silence).
while for husserl the melody is an example of the process of retention, where we are able to recollect a certain amount of signals even without activly memorizing them, the musical structure at play in this piece works with layering parallels of single events that in confrontation become a (more or less) organized structure (dub and overdubbing).

III (luisenstädtischer kanal)
the luisenstädtischer kanal (1852) connected the spree and the landwehrkanal. mainly used for the construction of the densly populated area luisenstadt, it was filled with earth from the construction of the u8 to be reebuild as a public park in 1926 (as reconstructed today). after the second worldwar it was filled further with trümmer (debris) of the bombings and became 1961 part of the mauer, the border between east and west-berlin, the so called todesstreifen (death-strip).

Island of the Hungry Ghosts is a hybrid documentary that moves between the natural, human and spiritual worlds. Located off the coast of Indonesia, the Australian territory of Christmas Island is inhabited by migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean, in a movement that has been provoked by the full moon for hundreds of thousands of years. Poh Lin Lee is a trauma therapist who lives with her family in this seemingly idyllic paradise. Every day, she talks with the asylum seekers held indefinitely in a high-security detention centre hidden in the island’s core, attempting to support them in a situation that is as unbearable as its outcome is uncertain. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their “hungry ghost” rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home.

This album presents the original score Aaron Cupples created for the film. Rich in texture and harmonics, the music is characterised by the bespoke instruments and recording techniques employed in its creation. The soundtrack also features sound recordist Leo Dolgan’s vivid field recordings. All captured on Christmas Island, the four pieces recall insect choruses, strange and ominous bird calls, erupting blowholes, fire, ocean, and Buddhist prayers for the dead.

“Drawing on discussions with director Gabrielle Brady, I began to perceive the island itself as the protagonist, with its own ancient rhythms and cycles set against the transitory human stories it endures. It was my intention to give voice to the island through the score. Imagining what this might sound like, emanating from deep within the landscape, I settled on a handmade long-string instrument. This single 13-foot long wire was tuned, bowed, and electromagnetically oscillated to create slowly evolving textures and deep layers of resonance.

From this foundation, the score introduces rhythm inspired by traditional Chinese festival drumming and chanting of Buddhist nuns recorded on Christmas Island by sound recordist Leo Dolgan. Working closely with him, the score is intentionally kept dark in timbre to allow a merging with the intricate nature recordings, which often play simultaneously with the score.

As the film’s narrative unfolds, harmonic movement and finally melody emerge, bringing a theme to the human stories. Their life rhythms and cycles interwoven with those of the island.” – Aaron Cupples
