Merlin Bobb: A House Music Pioneer

Brooklyn native Merlin Bobb, a legendary DJ and producer, is widely recognized as a trailblazer in the house music genre. His groundbreaking contributions have recently earned him renewed acclaim, including an invitation from Boiler Room to perform his debut live DJ set in 2022.

Merlin’s journey began with his first mix show on WBLS in New York, where he quickly became a favorite among dance music lovers. Known for his innovation, he experimented with new sounds and techniques, constantly redefining what it meant to be a DJ. This creative spirit laid the foundation for a long and celebrated career in the music industry.

But Merlin's influence wasn’t limited to the decks. As an executive at powerhouse labels like Atlantic and Elektra Records, he played a pivotal role in bringing house music to the mainstream. He also helped launch the careers of some of music’s biggest icons, including Missy Elliott, Brandy, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Outkast, and Dr. Dre. Simultaneously, he championed top House & dance music talents—legends like Frankie Knuckles, Timmy Regisford, Roger Sanchez, Kerri Chandler, David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, and DJ Spinna to produce remixes, sign artists, and spread the house music sound and culture.

Merlin also made a lasting impact on New York’s nightlife. He co-founded the iconic Club Shelter, a cultural landmark that became the heartbeat of NYC’s house and dance music scene. The legacy of Shelter continues to influence club culture globally.

Now, after years behind the scenes, Merlin has returned to the DJ booth—much to the excitement of longtime fans—and remains a respected force in house music today.
