This past weekend I was invited to DJ at the "Summer Oasis" music festival in Idlewild Michigan. I haven't played this amazing event since 2019 and I literally couldn't wait to get back. "SOMF" is the brainchild of Cedric McDougle and Cedric curates an amazing event every summer, it's a weekend  filled with all types of people, from filmmakers, artists and DJ's to educators, entrepreneur's and civic leaders and everyone in between. Folks camp out in these fancy tents, a concept called "Glamping" but the thing I like most about it is, as soon I get up to Idlewild (3 hour drive north of Detroit) I absolutely feel Free! It's so interesting but many people tell me they have that exact same feeling. 

For those that don't know; Idlewild was a safe space that was nicknamed "Black Eden" in the early to mid 1900's. Black people owned lake houses and cottages and would head up north for the summer to relax and listen to the best of the best in black entertainment. Cedric moved his summer festival up to Idlewild in 2016 and it gets bigger and better every single year. This year the weatherman was forecasting big rainstorms but God had different plans for us up there in Idlewild. The weather was perfect for an outdoor clamping fest..studio, I guess I get restless. So there are quite a few songs that I played during my (3 Hour Set) at SOMF that aren't in this mix but I think you'll still feel the vibe. I tried to blend a lot of Afro-House from South Africa with the Soulful House sounds from Detroit, Chicago, NYC etc. (Full description on my YouTube)

Merlin Bobb, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native and renowned DJ, is widely credited as a pioneer of the house music genre. His success in the industry has recently earned him recognition from Boiler Room, who invited him to perform his first live DJ set in 2022. Having grown up in New York, Merlin was exposed to a vibrant and eclectic mix of musical genres, including R&B, jazz, disco, salsa, punk, and hip hop.
 
Merlin landed his first mix show on WBLS and quickly became a favorite among dance music fans. Over the years, he experimented with different techniques and musical styles, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with DJ-ing. This signaled the start of a long and illustrious career in the entertainment industry.

Merlin's influence extended far beyond the DJ booth. As an executive at major music recording labels like Atlantic and Elektra Records, he was instrumental in introducing the burgeoning house music scene to a wider audience. He also signed and developed some of the industry's biggest names, including Missy Elliott, Brandy, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Outkast, and Dr. Dre. He also hired prominent dance music DJs and producers like Frankie Knuckles, Timmy Regisford, Roger Sanchez, Kerri Chandler, David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, and Pete Tong to sign artist, produce remixes and help spread the house music sound.

Merlin co-founded Club Shelter, a legendary nightclub that quickly became the epicenter of NYC's house and dance music scene. The Shelter brand and culture it sustained continue to reverberate around the world's house music scene to this day. Merlin has also co-founded other popular clubs in New York City, including Club Greenhouse and WIP.

Merlin has recently returned to DJ-ing, much to the delight of his fans, and continues to be an influential figure in the world of house music.
