Enlightenment By Rowland Sutherland (Inspired by A Love Supreme By John Coltrane)

3rd Movement - Sextet

The third movement is more abstractly related to a pre-existing form – the ground, or
repeating bass line over which new music is created. There is a feeling of being ever
more drawn into the piece harmonically as a result of the ’cello part descending deeper
and deeper down a circle of fifths. This movement is a virtuoso piece with a particularly
demanding flute part expertly played on this disc by the New Music Player’s flautist,
Rowland Sutherland. The middle section is a solo duet for the pianist’s two hands, lightly
accompanied by the other members of the ensemble.

The original was written for solo flute in 1997.

The version for Flute and Live Electronics was written in 2011 of which Rowland Sutherland gave the premiere performance with the composer Reinhard Fuchs on live electronics, which is this actual recording .

Performed at Kings Place, London.

Ethereal World feat Rowland Sutherland and Kate Shortt - London Jazz Festival - Duo Improvisation 2

The first part of this composition, Distant Lamentations of Jeremiah, is influenced by the music of the renowned 16th Century English composer Thomas Tallis, and in particular his choral piece Lamentations of Jeremiah. I have written this in both a classical and jazz context in order to enable the music to breath and float without any restrictions and  with a cantabile quality.
The second part, Eternal' is influenced by Turkish music. In particular it is sema-like and evokes a scenery of sufi whirling. Again,  have written this in both a classical and jazz context.
