Lewis James returns to Original Cultures with Desire for Infinity, his second EP for the label following from Krakatoa earlier this year which received support from dance music luminaries including DJ Shadow, Sinistarr, Dawn Day Night, Om Unit and Kidkanevil.

The creative road to Desire for Infinity has not been easy, with the EP undergoing multiple rewrites and changes yet after all was said and done it became clear that this new collection of songs is arguably Lewis James’ best work so far. The seven tracks that make up Desire for Infinity may seem disparate at first but there is an underlying unity that soon becomes apparent, a clear desire from the producer to break on through to the other side.

Opener Space Banquet is a gentle offering, a slow jam for digital lovers that leads us into Her Jewels, a track that delicately unfolds towards an epic crescendo, a sonic tale of reaching for the stars. On Midnight, Lewis rekindles the magic that made Powerchild a highlight of his previous EP by once more inviting Dolor on vocal duties. This time around the young American prodigy takes the guise of a dark and mysterious crooner, turning an inspired ode to late night romance and soul searching over a production that is as sensuous as the lyrics. Whole marks the half-way point of the EP and a sharp turn from an introspective quality to the music towards a no-holds-barred dancefloor mindset. Lewis shows his talent for crafting catchy productions that lie somewhere between rave and hip hop. Worse for its part packs more weight and attitude than the entire current trap trend ever could while the EP’s closer, All or Nothing, takes Bollywood for a ride in South London, gun cocked and all.

The release is rounded off by two remixes from young Irish talent SertOne and London's LV, two artists currently involved with Original Cultures. Available in digital format with artwork from Paper Resistance.

After a healthy slew of releases a few years back, Canadian softly-softly enthusiast Mike Silver's output quietened down a bit. That relative hibernation is now thankfully over, with two separate full-length projects due out over the summer. It's like what they say about (night) buses, etc etc. Having talked up his fondness for timbral delicateness for a while now – not to mention outright tipping the hat to Ryuichi Sakamoto and Laraaji in recent press releases – it's good to see him go whole hog on The Colours of Life.

The piece is 40 minutes of unbroken fourth world-y bliss, gorgeous vistas of sound sketched with the lightest of touches. Intended to be heard whole, we've pulled the fifth phase out here for closer inspection, but it could have just as easily been "Melting The Ice", "Imagination" or any of the other composite parts. You'll have to wait until August 14th for the full release – and could there be any label more fitting to do the honours than 1080p? No, no there couldn't.

Aetherworld x SORA - Satori

Chinese Singer ChaCha has collaborated with electronic music producer Soulspeak again, to release their latest single "Another Story" on indie label Ran Music. These two shining stars in China indie music scene are telling us another story this time.

Over the last 7 or 8 years, ChaCha has quickly become one of the most exciting and celebrated independent artists to come out of China. From recording with international artists such as Clive Chin, Kode9, Adrian Sherwood, Disrupt, The Bug, Rumi, Hamacide, Vibronics ,Desto, Jimi Tenor and Matthieu Chedid, to releasing music on labels such as VP/Randy’s, Hyperdub, Jahtari, 502 and Tokyo’s Black Smoker Records. 

In 2010 ChaCha teamed up with Dutch producer Jay.Soul and formed AM444, The duo released their first EP, Eye Wonder, in 2011, and their first full-length album ROOMS in 2012. In 2015  “Lies-Jay.Soul Truth Remix” was selected by the world-renowned basketball video game NBA2K 16, became the first Chinese song in NBA2K’s history.

She was also honored by being the first ever mainland Chinese artist to be accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid in 2011. Having access to a great variety or equipment and talented advisors also lead to her starting her new solo project and alias, ‘Faded Ghost’, a dark, droned out vocal experiment the likes of which are very different to anything coming out of the PRC.

Kai Luen aka "Soulspeak" is a Chinese-American producer, composer, and DJ from Los Angeles, California and currently based in Beijing.   His music is a combination of bass, noise, environmental sound recording, and organic instruments and has been touted as a producer to watch out for by CNN and Juno.

His various projects include an album with Ttechmak that explores the intersections of improvised music and electronics, as well his solo work as Kai Luen that explores the darker side of bass and decaying sound design.


As a DJ and performer, he has performed all over the world at major venues and festivals including the Boiler Room, Electric Daisy Carnival, the Roxy, Whiskey A Gogo, and Clockenflap music festival.
