Lalgudi Gopala Iyer Jayaraman was an Indian Carnatic violinist, vocalist and composer, and is part of the violin-trinity of Carnatic Music. He expanded the style of violin playing by inventing a whole new technique that is designed to best suit the needs of Indian Classical Music. He was a path-breaking accompanist, soloist and composer, and elevated his instrument and the very art to new heights.

Thillana is a rhythmic piece in Carnatic music that is generally performed at the end of a concert and widely used in classical indian dance performances. It was popularized by Dr. M Balamuralikrishna among others.

I made this mix to commemorate the passing of amazing people. 
More than two and a half million people died of COVID-19, and this thillana ought to be for them. It's also a celebration of my fusion culture. In 2016, Coldplay performed this song in Philadelphia (Made in America), and I got to see the audience, with its wave of light bracelets enjoy this beautiful song about optimism and hope.

One of my favorite things about the American Supreme Court was the relationship between Justice Ginsburg and Justice Scalia. The two were ideologically at the opposite ends, and though they would battle each other intellectually, they were good friends who enjoyed opera and even enjoyed a trip to India.

The Mohanakalyani thillana has been covered numerous times since Lalgudi Jayaraman. Although, I have sampled two different versions of the original, the violin here is an actual recording of Lalgudi Jayaraman.

The soundtrack of the Tamil film "Jeans" by AR Rahman is a timeless masterpiece that was played in our house throughout my childhood. From the first moment we took the cassette out of it's jeans pocket case and put it in the tape player back in 1998, "Jeans" established itself in my mind as a foundational benchmark of what inspired music could sound like.

As such, it is my pleasure to revisit this album with the inspiration it provided and present it to you with my unique perspective as "JEANS (Est. 1998)". I hope it inspires you as it inspired me.

My interpretation of an already incredible piece of Indian fusion: Manmarziyan by Amit Trivedi (Lootera, 2013). I included Snegithane by A.R. Rahman (Alaipayuthey, 2000) and Edho Oru Paatu by	S. A. Rajkumar (Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen, 1998) (it's kind of random, I remember hearing it as a kid a lot. looks like it's a critically acclaimed Tamil movie.) Base track is Wishes by Morfil (@morfil4u)

The general theme of this mix is about longing and love, and then celebrating when you do meet the other person.
