Roy Assaf Trio 

Roy Assaf, Jake Goldbas and Raviv Markovitz met in New York City. 

The beginning of the story will sound familiar to you. 
Three in demand musicians touring and recording with many great bands, trying to stay busy and play a lot of different music and gain experience and exposure.

But something changed during the fall of 2012, when Roy decided to make a change in his life and concentrate fully on his new journey as a leader. 
Roy met Jake back at 2007 when they both attended the Manhattan School of Music, and he met Raviv for the first time at a big band gig on the West Village in NY in 2011.

The first step in Roy’s journey was to choose his new trio members, considering many aspects that were important to him. He could have experimented and checked out different musicians, but his gut feeling said that these were the guys for the job.

They scheduled a session, got together and started playing some standards and Roy’s original music just to get to know each other. 
It was very clear from the very beginning that this was the band and 
this trio had a great future working together. 

The journey has begun.

They were rehearsing every week, learning the music, trying to re-arrange and bring up new ideas. They put a lot of thoughts together on how to make the trio personal to them, and discussed what message they would like to send to the world. 

They have been striving to create a sound that belongs to them. A sound that can challenge them artistically and conceptually but at the same time relates to many people.


Roy’s goal from the very beginning was not to create the typical Jazz piano trio where the pianist normally shines and the bassist and drummer accompany him/her. They decided that they will all be the leaders and that together they can search for new colors, especially from other genres.

Through the process, they have learned that no matter what song or style they play, there are always elements of melody, emotions and groove in their music. 
Many people already noticed that during their first performance at the Jewish Community Center in Washington D.C.
People who don’t normally listen to Jazz were attracted and hooked by their melodic themes, sense of groove and emotional aspect. 

Roy, Jake and Raviv kept rehearsing every week for a year and in between they played several shows, including the Blue Note and the Rubin Museum in New York City. Their musical and personal connection became stronger and stronger, and in September 2013 they booked three days at NRS Studio in the Catskills, NY and recorded their special musical bond. 

The album is coming out this coming summer and during this year and 2015, the trio tour schedule includes performances in Japan, Europe, 
North, Central and South America and Canada.

It is really rare to find bands that stick together nowadays, but the Roy Assaf Trio has become one of them. It is just the beginning of the journey for them but they are looking forward to sharing their music and joy with their fans, and most importantly, their life long mission - being able to help people all over the world through the power of music.
