Amnesia Scanner’s third full-length album titled STROBE.RIP is a collaboration with the artist and musician Freeka Tet, who joins the album and associated live performances as a vocalist and creative collaborator.

Released by PAN records, STROBE.RIP is part of a broader series of live performances, installations, videos and physical products created by the group.

Since its inception in 2014, Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala have continued to evolve and redefine Amnesia Scanner through experimentation across online and IRL realms. This album brings them a step closer to the latter.

With French-born, New York City-based Freeka Tet on board, STROBE.RIP acquires a new array of influences that draw from the multidisciplinary artist’s hacker mindset, shaping the sound into new forms. As a programmer and technologist, Freeka Tet’s work straddles commerce and art, combining intuitive and performative modes of expression with emergent technology and creative coding. Much like Amnesia Scanner, Tet draws from online vernacular and techno-magic to create satirical, uncanny work – artificially augmented, and highly engineered sounds, textures, images and ideas that translate memes and code into a more human and affective language.

Haimala and Kalliala say, “Amnesia Scanner is now living in the world it has built,” signaling a sincere commitment to the act. The human dimension in STROBE.RIP is chaotic: a reverse hero’s journey that merges deep-fried baroque with the quasi-angelic into a psychotic megamix of tropes, lyrics, genres, and sonic palettes that are both disorienting and deeply resonant.

The opening track Tongue Demons perfectly summarizes this, with blaring synth stabs and frenetic drum patterns paving the way for a broken melody arranged through a digital brass chord progression. Giggle and Bounds follow right after: two outstanding pieces of introspection signaling the melodic turn of the album, with the latter almost posing as a weirdo 2-step ballad filled with deep pads and pitched-up and down vocals.

The 160bpm, 4-to-4 pulsing kicks of Ledge and the palm-muted chords of Disperse serve as a perfect build-up to Ride, right in the middle of the tracklist: a summer hit from hell, a crooked saxophone-graced tune carried by a crusty, Balearic acoustic arpeggio. The alt acoustics continue with Damon, or at least before the track turns from Nirvana’s Unplugged to Slayer’s double kick drum pedals and becomes thrashtronica with Tet on screamo duties.

Things get softer with Clown, specifically in the chanted refrain, and even more aetherial in the almost trip-hop timbres of abandoned.club, where chopped-and-screwed vocals sing “I lost myself in the club.” Scorpions, Bats & Spiders is the abstract gem declaring the death of Deconstructed Club Music—a genre created by journalists and pioneered by the duo, among others. The words “deconstructed,” “club,” and “panel discussion” are spelled out in a vortex throughout the track as if they were to be carved on the genre’s imaginary gravestone. Closing the album, the saw bass of Cat serves Euro-electro à la Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction, while the doomed outro Merge closes the album in a triumphant aggregation of noise and pixelated drums that render the image of a crust-punk ensemble.

MUTEK présente la performance live de l’artiste canadienne Carmen Jaci, enregistrée lors de la 24e édition du festival à Montréal en août dernier.

La performance de Carmen Jaci explore l'impact de la technologie sur nos identités à travers la visualisation de ses données personnelles collectées au fil des ans. Cette composition musicale hétéroclite et fantaisiste se tenant à la lisière du surréel a eu lieu en première canadienne au festival MUTEK le 23 août 2023. Initialement, c’est une performance qui combine le son avec les éléments visuels avec l'artiste Matthew Schoen.

Productrice et compositrice canadienne basée aux Pays-Bas, Carmen Jaci conçoit des univers fantaisistes où des sons caractéristiques de l’enfance s’enchevêtrent à ceux de la musique populaire et des compositions symphoniques. Exploitant les contrastes entre organicité et électronique, elle propose des assemblages hybrides où convergent instruments acoustiques, synthétiseurs et enregistrements vocaux. Ses projets récents s’inspirent des techniques de production en studio et des codes propres à la musique de danse que l’artiste déconstruit, donnant libre cours à son imagination.

Originally recorded at the International Studio & Curatorial Program, Brooklyn, in 2018 - Betty Hammerschlag’s ISCP EP gets a reboot via Cologne’s SPA Recordings. 
ISCP emphasizes Betty Hammerschlag‘s signature that recycles intros, phrases and found sounds into infinite loops. Layered emotions are warping with desires to cycle endlessly about each other. Their deconstruction of pop songs is a delicate act of extracting quintessential temperaments of emotional pop. The Songs are floating eternally like a never-ending sillage full of sentiments.

Makoto Oshiro, from Okinawa and now based in Berlin, has developed an artistic practice spanning sound, site installation, field recording, language, instrument design, and more for over a decade. His performances and installations have spanned the globe, regularly appearing in Japan, China, Taiwan, Germany, England, the US, and further - often collaborating with other artists, most recently with Nick Klein on the album 𝑺𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒅 released by the cult Italian label Superpang last year.

𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 documents four live and studio performances from 2020-2023 in Tokyo and Berlin, and marks Oshiro’s first solo album since 2014. Small electro-mechanical devices made by Oshiro, which he calls 𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴, are coaxed into physically generating sound by rapidly opening and closing relays. The speed of the relays is controlled by Oshiro, producing a distinctive clicking (“𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪…”) at lower speeds - then bursting into squeals, squawks, and drones at their maximal activity, occasionally creating sympathetic harmonics with the surface they have been placed upon. Functioning as acoustic oscillators, numerous 𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴 build a richly layered environment, approaching sonic phenomenon at its most fundamental aspects.

These recordings bridge installation and performance, machine and organism, abstract and physical, subconscious and rapture - especially on the title track 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅, with over 40 minutes of densely unfolding square waves and their superpositions.

Listen loud, lay down, walk around, meditate, stretch, and wander through the void.

Giulia Rae “O”, her first release on Riforma, is a two-track EP emblematic of her approach to composition. Working by contrast, the sound materializes a dialogue between algorithmically sequenced synthetic melodies and hazy field recordings recalling a sense of place.

A detailed and immersive sound design, able to re-create environments in which we feel we once have been. Echoing emotional hallucinations, the melodies and textures wrap around the listener, and a sense of falling deeply pervades us. “2023” is atomised and totally reinterpreted by Elif Gülin Soğuksu, where each piece returns feverish, compressed in time, the voice marks a new pattern in the composition. “regolo” was displaced and degraded by going through the procedural machines of C3 S R crew.

'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised Strings' is Dane Law's (@thedanelaw) first release for Astral Plane Recordings, born out of a guest mix for NTS in August 2017. Across prior releases for Conditional, Genot Centre and Quantum Natives, the London-based artist has crafted a sonic space that merges pagan folklore, tensile algorithmic production and hyperrhythmic dance forms.

That NTS mix, titled “Digital Paganism”, was composed of a distinctly uncanny assemblage that drew from Arvo Pärt and The Wicker Man soundtrack. 'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised String's furthers the ideas introduced in “Digital Paganism”, a simultaneously explication of and alienation from its naturalistic tones gone haywire.

Across Algorithmic Music’s 12 songs, Dane Law’s delicate approach to composition is laid bare. Individual sound objects are isolated in space and rotated, forming plastic points in a series of eerie hymns. Guitar and synthesizer sounds are present, distanced from their quotidian origin points by an ascetic utilization of spatial mixing.

Built on MIDI files processed through a second order Markov strong algorithm, songs like “Running Hill” and “Southbound to denshaw” impose a certain music box familiarity, opening a portal to a world of skewed geometries where known forms are not what they seem. Meanwhile, the two part “Delph” saga embraces a spectral queasiness, morphing the ear’s ability to locate the shape of sound in time.

'Algorithmic Music for Synthesised Strings' is out digitally on April 24 and will be followed by a cassette release once regular trips to the post office are logistically feasible.
