MINDS are set to release a monster 22 track V/A highlighting the power of the creative community in Ireland - with all proceeds going to PIPS Hope & Support. 
 
The issue of mental health in Northern Ireland is a complicated one, the multi-generational trauma brought on by the troubles, coupled with years of austerity have resulted in a complex and struggling system. The pandemic has also led to an increase in feelings of hopelessness, with isolation and uncertainty often over-shadowing signs of progress. At times however, conflict can inspire, unite, and while there is a long way to go, some collectives continue to put one small step forward despite having one of the toughest years of our lives. 

 MINDS has been an advocate for Mental Health in the city for over three years, but with the closure of clubs and no longer able to raise money through events - the crew have come together to produce a genre-merging V/A - combining their passion for collaboration, mutual aid and community spirit. 

 The opening track comes from local MC Emby, creating a space where lyricism and minimalism meet in perfect tantum. Intimate lyrics highlight the dimly lit room as Emby reckons with dissatisfaction and inner discourse. The ultra-cinematic feel of Reger’s ‘Nostromo’ follows suit , as heavily manipulated sounds create a claustrophobic unrest. Ominous piano tones are carried by the rain, yet optimism exists in the rising strings before being plunged further underwater.

 The exhibition of emerging sounds within the V/A is imposing, from Nyla’s bass heavy ‘Effect’ to the emotive breakbeat of Roker’s ‘Secrets’. Gilmore displays his knack for live percussion and swing while the tension and release of Cartin’s ‘Spanner’ is entrancing, an exploration of space; innovation continually advancing fresh perspectives. 

 Synonymous with shaping the instrumental grime scene we know today, Belfast’s beloved Bloom returns for his first release in over 3 years both as frightening and alluring as ever. Deconstructed rhythms pierce through with such velocity, while off-centre melody constantly reinvents its purpose and place. A welcome return for one of the city's most dynamic producers. 

 The V/A finishes with a heavy-hitting dose of dense techno from Riotcode; a chance to surrender to our primal selves, beckoning us to leave it all on the dancefloor once again.

We premiere a track from Irish DJ and producer Mercer today, as he releases his track 'Rock Tha Party' with Scottish label, Milkit Sounds as part of their NEIGH WORRIES VA 02.

Milkit Sounds is a Scottish independent brand, homegrown in the capital of the Highlands in Inverness, while also being based in the idyllic surroundings of the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. 

Perfectly timed with the opening of the UK nightlife industry, the fifth release on the Milkit label provides a VA compilation of club-ready & emotional cuts. With a focus on breaks and rave nostalgia, the release comprises of works from exclusively Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish artists.

A previous contributor to the label and new resident for Milkit, Mercer joins up with the team once again for his second release on the label. Originally from Belfast, the now Edinburgh based producer has been into music since day dot. From growing up learning the piano at a young age and ripping tunes off Limewire and YouTube back in the day, Mercer’s taste varies massively. Once able to head to nightclubs, his taste in dance music really came to the fore, developing a taste for the culture from frequenting Edinburgh venues Cab Vol and Sneaky Pete’s.

More recently, he has found himself delving more into the UK sounds such as breakbeat and garage. In terms of inspirations here, you’re looking at the likes of Maruwa, Desert Sound Colony and L Major.

In addition to his more signature breakbeat style, Mercer incorporates a healthy dose of electro vibes to this record. Heavily featuring the classic 808 sounds, the release layers chopped up break samples, satisfyingly discordant synth lines with a driving bass lead and an array of perfectly placed soundbites and sonic elements. The track we premier today features heavy break, with the addition of a hip-house-style vocal that ties the together with a ravey twist.

 London based producer and hard-hitting Bristol sub maestro, Indent, has been producing for 7 years and DJ'ing for even longer, rolling onto the commercial release scene with Holding Hands Records earlier in the year. Indent received deserved recognition when Desert Sound Colony picked him for a two-track digital release; Brad submitted his track 'Falling' to a live remix session on YouTube, and whilst originally not intending to release commercially, the concept ended up being too strong not to.'

Label founder Holly Lester pools together a selection of her favourite artists from across the globe to form the first volume in the Duality Trax Visions compilation series. Bouncing from the U.S to Europe, the VA travels through a multitude of moods and genres across seven tracks - including acid tinged electro from New York, breaks infused garage from Chicago, rave-fuelled house music from Belgium and a pulsating trance-inspired club track from Estonia. 

Today we bring you the first listen of 'Umwaya', a dreamy breakbeat number that beautifully rounds off the compilation from Belfast hustler Optmst.  

Keen to reflect the core ethos of the label, the compilation series name serves as a nod towards her ideals of a more equalised future in electronic music - something which is fittingly demonstrated throughout this stellar lineup. 100% of compilation profits will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, who provide medical care to casualties of war in Gaza, Syria, Yemen and much more. The organisation has also worked tirelessly to provide Covid-19 related aid to countries hit the hardest throughout the pandemic and are currently lobbying for a global waiver of patents on COVID-19 technologies.
