DJ Scientist - Soul Rebel In A German Bar
(A Mix of German Reggae, Kraut Dub, and NDW-Reggae 1980-1988)

“Soul Rebel In A German Bar” is another contribution to DJ Scientist’s discography of theme based mixes. After sets of Xian Funk, German Polit Funk, German Boogie and his popular Soviet Groove mixes, Scientist’s newest work features 26 rare and mostly obscure German reggae tracks (whereas only one track is by an Swiss group). The cover as well as the title of the mix are a homage to the album “Soul Rebels In A German Car” by Puls der Zeit from 1987, a band that included members of the first German reggae group Taugenixe. 

Early reggae from Germany is scarce and it took some time for @djscientist to gather enough good tracks for a comprehensive and floating mix. Except for one track, everything had been taken off of original vinyl copies from his collection. Quite obviously, a lot of the bands featured in the mix had no profound knowledge of true reggae culture. The dubby tracks “Abu Dhabi Check” by the aforementioned Puls der Zeit, as well as “Prejudice” by Natty U and Mikey Prodigal were rare exceptions from this. Many other bands came out of the NDW, new wave or rock field. They incorporated elements of reggae, rather treating it as some sort of novelty (actually similar to the treatment of early rap music). Still, some of the results were pretty unique, groovy and deserve respect in its own right. 

Last but not least, it’s notable that the mix was made during a 3 week quarantine in November 2021. It was an inspiring relief for Scientist to be able to work on music again, while he was stuck with uncreative and non-productive matters and had to deal with private issues for the most part of the year. Luckily, he finished the recording of his reggae mix before - on the next day (!) - a thief broke into his flat while he was in his office room next door. Most notably, his Apple notebook with preparations of all recent and upcoming DJ sets was stolen. 

“Soul Rebel In A German Bar” is not the first mix of early reggae or reggae-ish tunes from Germany, but Scientist’s selection bears some new discoveries and unknown tracks and should be an essential listen for all rare groove heads and music lovers. We hope you dig it as much as we do!

After the guest appareance by Craig Cigar Tamlin (find his mix also in our profile) now it's time for Thulani Shuku and his 2hrs Special on RRYTM via THF Radio.

Thulani is a South African painter, art teacher, record collector and selector based in London. Ubuntu Soundz sets are a melting pot of unique sounds from their home country, South Africa, the African Diaspora and beyond, but in this mix, Thulani explores the rich sound of Jazz cuts produced inside South Africa and by musicians that were in exile mainly in Europe and the USA during Apartheid. 

The mix is a snapshot that demonstrates the diversity of sounds that SA jazz has to offer. Thulani knits together funky and soulful jazz, free and spiritual jazz plus tracks that are laced with deep African traditional roots. Every track on this mix is uniquely SA, either in sound or contact.

Today we have good news, and we have bad news. 

Let's start w/ the good news, psh, what am I saying - the G-R-E-A-T news: a new episode of RRYTM Radio with your host, the intern, is now out and available for streaming on SoundCloud. And what an episode this is! Former co-host of the show, living music-Brittanica, DJ extraordinaire and bff Radio Hobo visited the radio station after traveling in Colombia for a few months, to play some of the gems he found on his journey, and tell a tale or two about diggin' in Colombia.

But we let the artist speak for herself:

"Hello! My name is Carmentea @do-a-tea from Colombia, I am a vinyl music selector, and I am also a member of Los Rulos Vinyl Club, a collective of music-loving women. This time, I share with you my selection inspired by the new awakening in front of a new stage and alignment of "fulgor" or brightness in the sky: the age of Aquarius. These are times of essential changes focused on what is important with harmony and without haste, such as the consciousness of humanity no place for masks and ego, the dance and celebration of the reciprocal when it is assumed and taken responsibility for life. In Colombia, we have the saying "Si sabe que el agua moja por qué no se arremangó?" that means "If you know that the water is wet, why didn't you roll up your sleeves?" or we also say "Al pan pan y al vino vino" would translate "To the bread bread and to the wine wine" it means to speak directly, with frankness and honesty, to each what corresponds! This internal dawn and shining is the best amulet of good luck, healing and protection that praises (among others) the orisha Babalú Ayé, lord of life on Earth."
