For our fifth entry in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from Ohio's @plural

James Johnson Jr AKA Kukri AKA Plural is one exceptionally talented electronic music producer, composer and DJ known across the world for his hard techno sound. His calm demeanour belies the massive amounts of energy he creates in his highly technical DJ sets, and the ethereal beauty of his live performances with many top-flight DJs swearing by his output, dropping his tracks relentlessly throughout their sets.

James grew up in the 80's listening mostly to soul, RnB and hip-hop. He knew he wanted to follow a musical path, but because he couldn't rap or sing and was more interested in the beats he decided to become a DJ. His early inspiration came from amazing artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Herbie Handcock and Public Enemy. Once he started getting fully into becoming a DJ and discovering so many more styles of music out there, especially techno, it was Jeff Mills, Claude Young, DJ Stingray and The Horrorist to name a few that held his awe.

His performance history started in 95' at clothing store Stigmata where some local DJs played and began to show him the ropes, becoming good friends and going on to throw parties all around his home city. He now plays regularly at all the tops clubs all over the world.

He started making music around 98' buying synths and drum machines, and over the years his studio set up has constantly evolved becoming a myriad of mechanical hardware in order to make some fire to make the people move. For James there is no better feeling.  His releases appear on many amazing imprints including Metroplex, Dobox, Audio Textures and Panel Trax, and garnered him the acclaim of dance music's elite, making him a much sought after recording artist and remixing engineer counting Alan Oldham, Chance McDermott and D'Funk as being able testify to him mangling their material to extreme techno perfection. James is also the founder of Ditekt Records, a label that's a vehicle for him to push into more exploratory and experimental sounds and for his fellow colleagues and favourite artists to remix his material.

I was lucky enough to be a dnb raver in Washington DC and Baltimore during  the late 1990's and early 2000's. It was only years later that I came to realize how extra special that period was for DC dnb and its own roots and culture. This weeks guest played an integral part in building a lot of that. It's really humbling to share this one with ya'll. Please welcome, R4NS0M. Originally hailing from the storied Washington DC drum & bass scene, Boston’s R4NS0M has been at the forefront of the American drum & bass movement since its early days. Over the course of his career, He’s performed at legendary events like Buzz, Ultraworld, Resonate, Eklektic, Platinum, Respect, Elements, and Cadence, and crafted mixes for Toronto’s iconic Prophecy FM and Winslow’s Bad Snares Anonymous. As a producer, he’s released music on such labels as Moving Shadow, Ohm Resistance, Soul Deep, Detached Audio, 1 More Thing, WiddFam, and 4 Corners Music, and worked with a number of artists, including Sinthetix, Corrupt Souls, UFO!, Ben Rolo, Fake, Dvalue and Metcalf. With decades of work under his belt, and a decidedly individual take on the drum-n-bass sound, R4NS0M continues to cement one of the more unique legacies in the history of the genre as a creator and pioneer.

FOUR MEN - ONE MISSION

It happened during the summer of 2000. North America’s most prominent drum and bass DJs joined forces to create the legendary crew known as PLANET OF THE DRUMS. Using their combined muscle to push drum and bass music into the spotlight of the main stage they toured tirelessly for well over a decade, fronted by the vocal rhyme animal known as Messinian. Their incessant drive and motivation helped set the groundwork of the scene that exists today.

Feeling their work completed, the team turned their focus to personal projects and the PLANET OF THE DRUMS program was retired. But as was soon discovered, the drum and bass scene in North America began a slow freefall into underground obscurity.

This could not stand.

Reuniting in 2017, the PLANET OF THE DRUMS crew returned to continue their original mission - celebrating, honoring and advancing drum and bass music. “AWAKENING” represents a retrospective of some of their favorite sounds, highlights and moments from the past year. What always made POTD special was the compelling combination of the boys’ varied styles - AK and his raw motherfucking breakbeats. Dara’s rolling dancefloor vibes. Dieselboy with the heavy cinematic pressure. Three hundred and sixty degrees of futuristic drum and bass business.
