House Sessions #104 - June 2021

Ripped off an old cassette tape given to me way back in the day.

Whilst the premise of the Guest Mix Series was built on the foundations of showcasing talents of the future, when the opportunity arises to present one of the living legends of the House scene to our page, you simply don't turn that opportunity down.

Over the past twenty years Phil Asher aka "the godfather" of British Soulful House has created a legacy that quite simply speaks for itself. The history of the scene may be littered with unforgettable names, but the influence of the Londoner cannot be understated. 

Having created well over a hundred of his own distinctive, multilayered productions for his Restless Soul & Focus moniker he has collaborated with everyone from Zed Bias to Benji B along the way, always leaving him receptive to different styles. 
 
Productions aside Phil is also the resident DJ at the long standing & hugely successful music institution that is Soul Heaven, having persuaded the likes of Masters Of Work to come & entertain it's audience on the world famous Ministry of Sound dancefloor. West Londoner's may also be familiar with his residency at the legendary Inspiration Information series also. 

In anticipation of his set at Sun Splash, a week long House, Funk, Soul & Jazz festival taking place on the Turkish Riviera between 2nd - 7th June we've teamed up with the Festival to bring this guest mix from the man himself! Alongside the likes of Giles Peterson, Norman Jay & Koreless this mix outlines the kind of soulful vibe in what is an intimate celebration the holds around 400 people.

Acknowledging Mr Asher himself, the festival organisers left us this message: “This is a truly unique experience, combining luxury travel, good living and fine cuisine with some of the best dance music in the world.” Amen to that.

In the second of our 2015 festival warm up mix series, Phil Asher, takes to the decks to brings us 10 Tracks of an inspirational, uplifting and of course deeply soulful nature.

Phil Asher has been one of the residents of SunSplash Festival over the last 7 years, during which time he has graced our beach parties and club sessions with nothing less that pure class. Whether the occasion calls for good time party tracks, or something deep, moody, broken beat, mellow or cutting edge, few DJs can delve into as wide a spectrum of good music and present it with such natural ability and flair. As far as we are concerned Phil Asher is nothing short of house music royalty, but house music is just the beginning.

We've actually had this on the iPod for years but Tony has very kindly offered it up again for a re-airing. It really it quite seminal stuff. 'Recorded, late into the Night, January 2003. A live, one hit mix via Suade's Studio in Sandyford, Newcastle upon Tyne. A personal soundtrack to a difficult time in my life. Poor health and unrequited love. Hopefully, the lyrics in these great songs and the overall mood of the mix, reflect that. Enjoy and thanks for listening'.

SESSIONS 04 - Tony 586

Phil Asher - MiX 8.o

Phil Asher serves up his debut release on his newly formed RSTLSS TRAX imprint. A master of the house sound, Phil’s productions exude an air of sophistication and class, both of which can be found in the Rhythmical Whims EP.

Lead track ‘Juno’ combines a tribalesque beat and sub heavy bass with flashes of well-placed synths. 

As the name would suggest ‘Piano’ is all about the deftly filtered keys which roll over a funky bass line. A sense of improvisation from the piano keeps the track forever evolving whilst the percussion keeps it firmly locked in a groove.

The EP’s final offering ‘Rhythmic_1’ is a deep, percussive tool that will slot well into any well-crafted DJ set.

An imprint that bridges the gap between soulful and tech house, RSTLSS TRX lays its focus on providing straight-up dance floor orientated house music and the Rhythmical Whims 2 EP sits perfectly within the label’s remit. Whether it’s the sprawling dub house vibes of ‘Crowds’ which has been winning the praise of dancefloors across the globe, the dark tribal intensity of ‘BALAFON’ on which Dwala steals the show, or the hypnotism of the aptly titled ‘London Style’, functionality is at the core of this well-crafted EP.

mood:thursday underground sessions

One of the key influences for my shift from more US/vocal house to a much deeper overall feeling in the mid-late 90s was via the Northern UK 'deep house' labels, predominantly as 2020 Vision, Toko & in my then-hometown of Manchester, the outstanding Paper Recordings. The sound of Salt City Orchestra, aka Si Brad, Miles Hollway & Elliot Eastwick had a huge impact on me & totally moved my focus into a whole different sphere of sounds. This mix is a nod to them, almost 2 hours minutes of what is, to me, some of the best deeper-ended house music that you could care to hear -
