Surprise Hotel :: Fool's Gold (Micachu & The Shapes Remix)

Stay With Me was written quite some time ago as a songwriting experiment to create something simple, anthemic and unifying. It was actually a lot harder to do then I thought…it’s difficult to be simple and direct and still make something original. I sat on the song for a couple years and then after I finished the last few shows to promote the Nights & Weekends Music for Marriage LP I tapped my good friend Jordan Chini (Boy Dude) to co-produce the track with me.

  We wanted to come up with a new sound for the recording. I didn’t feel this song fit the older El Sportive & The Blooz, live band aesthetic. We needed something new, since the song has a very basic classic chord structure we went for a sound we call “Retro-Future”... playing with arrangements and production from classic 40s and 50s R&B but using a sonic pallet of analog synths and drum machines that weren’t invented when those recordings were being produced. The idea was to make something that would blend to create something that would be played on a jukebox in a bar in the movie Blade Runner.

 We knew we needed a great singer for the lead vocal and that it should be a woman…I had just met an amazing artist named Omotola she has incredibly powerful, compelling voice and uses so much of her range, something that reminds me of Kate Bush. She had just the right feel for this song and happily she agreed to sing the lead vocal. We were also able to recruit the famous and super talented Waters Family (20 Feet From Stardom) http://thewatersjuliamaxinelutheroren.com/ to sing back up vocals along with the SIlverlake Choir… it took the track to another level. Top it all off with a blazing sax solo from Jens Bjørnkjær (Oh Future) and upright bass by Rusty Logsdon (Eels) and you have an all star cast on this single. 

 Most importantly this song in it’s lyrical content and its participants point to an understanding that beyond all attempts to divide or separate us we are ultimately, intrinsically, connected.  It feels like the right moment for this song to be released as we face a world in transition were the old systems and structures are being challenged, we have an opportunity to build new ones that reflect our commonality and unify us. It is my heartfelt hope that we do.
