Guem & Zaka Percussion - Le Serpent (EL Búho Dancefloor Edit)

The second single from "A Guide to the Birdsong of Western Africa" comes from Senegalese super-group Wau Wau Collectif and features Kora maestro Lamine Cissokho. They made a beautiful track inspired by the Yellow-casqued hornbill, a species that faces a high risk of extinction in the wild, mainly due to habitat loss and hunting. The lyrics call on citizens of the world to mobilise, come together and protect our ecosystems.

If you ever wondered what organic dem-bow sounded like, this is about as close as you could get! After years of mutual admiration, Brujería sees El Búho and Bomba Estereo’s Li Saumet collaborating for the first time and it doesn’t disappoint. El Búho trademark floating flutes, weave in and out of the reggaeton rhythm while Saumet’s lyrics call for the need to cleanse and heal, embracing the
brujería or witchcraft of her ancestors.

This collaboration with longtime friend & co-producer, Oliwa, features vocal delivery and heartbreakingly beautiful songwriting by Colombian Canadian artist/singer, Lido Pimienta.

Behind the live cumbia rhythms, bass synths, analog keys, 808 drums & guitars, the vision of this track is one of upliftment of womxn and femmes everywhere, and the rise of the energy of the southern hemisphere like a serpent fearlessly rising out of colonization.

Lido Pimienta shines both in her vocal treatment and her ability to poetically and powerfully deliver this message. We offer this as a song of empowerment, anti-establishment, and upliftment for femmes and marginalized peoples everywhere. Time to rise.

“Janfa”, the final single from Yemanjo’s full length 'La Misma Fuente', is a satisfying detour into Dub/Reggae territory with a West African “desert blues” twist. The track is anchored by irresistible guitar and ngoni riffs and a spellbinding trumpet line; but the real star here is Mariam Koné (also featured on the first single from the album, entitled “Juru Fô”) whose call and response vocals ring out with effortless authority in her native Bambara language.
