With her unique ethereal and otherworldly style, artist and producer Emily Magpie delves deep into vulnerability as a form of power in her upcoming album ‘There Are Other Forms of Strength’, set for release April 19th 2024 with Def Pressé.

Emily Magpie is an artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Bristol creating dream pop delving into different dimensions. Her recent EP 'She' on Def Pressé has been championed by Deb Grant, Tom Ravenscroft, Nabihah Iqbal and Emily Pilbeam on BBC 6 Music.

Set for release in 2024 with Def Pressé, her lyrics take us on a journey of self-reflection into the subconscious in which she lays out her flaws and fears in a way which feels simultaneously dream-like and razor sharp. Her production mirrors this vulnerability in its raw, textured electronic and organic sounds which shape shift into a myriad of unique atmospheric alt-pop landscapes. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Anna Wise, Sylvan Esso and Anna B Savage as well as philosophy, literature and nature Magpie takes the listener on a journey that is both otherworldly and relatable.

Of the album Emily says, "There are archetypes akin to yin and yang in so many cultures- the feminine and masculine. I felt I'd been focused on the masculine, doing doing doing. I committed to spending more time in that internal, feminine, dreaming space which felt like a radical act for myself and within our society. There's so much I never valued or took the time to process within myself. I found this quiet, vulnerable strength. I wrote this album in the midst of that journey and as a kind of magic spell to lead me along that path."

Spending the last few years playing support for artists such as This Is The Kit and Let’s Eat Grandma, and everywhere from Green Man Festival and Boomtown Festival in the UK she returned in 2021 with a dynamic + exciting full band experience which have been playing sold out headline shows since, including Sebright Arms as well as Dot to Dot Festival and FOCUS Wales where the band were picked out as one of God is in the TV's festival highlights. Press highlights include The Line of Best Fit, Earmilk and Mahogany. 

Bastien Keb recently remixed a song from Emily’s ‘She’ EP, Down in the Deep, and it was release at the end of 2023. Emily will be supporting Bastien Keb at the Moth Club (30th March) and playing at The Great Escape 2024.  She will also be supporting Dizraeli on their UK tour throughout April and May.

Mess you up is the second single from the upcoming collaborative album between Melbourne shoegazers Oceans, and dream-pop artist Mayzie.  

The song is about learning to find yourself again when a relationship begins to suffocate you. Sometimes even in good relationships, we can become so fixated on that we forget who we are. 

 It was produced by Lindsay Gravina (Jet, Adalita, Swervedriver). 
The husband and wife duo are playing New Colossus Festival in March , and Europe in Sep.

Mess You Up

RTE Radio1 Folk Award nominee (Best Emerging Artist category 2022), Ciara O’Neill releases new track ‘Woman’ the first single taken from her upcoming EP of the same name following the release of the celebrated ‘La Lune’ and ‘Le Soleil’ singles.
Ciara says: “Woman is an exploration of the beauty and complexities of being a Woman in modern society. Looking at myself, my own female relatives and those Women in history who have lived lives in the shadows, it’s about having a desire for more, not feeling the need to conform to expectations placed on us, and allowing ourselves to be visible and speak our truths.”

My buddy sent me a message at 9:15am on November 26th, 2023. He told me to “write the great Musk album of our time.” Ok.  

I read that weird Walter Issacson book about him and listened to all the interviews for a week or two. The points of him that people have strong opinions about were almost immediately boring. Underneath was how hard it is for him to relate to and communicate with other people. You can have all the money in the world, but you can’t buy that, and it might be more unattainable with the more wealth and notoriety you obtain. That’s probably more human and universal than trying to go to Mars. 

His presence has always felt super visceral to the Bay Area. Even if he’s on the other side of the world warning the IMF about artificial intelligence and dog currency, the Tesla plant off the 880 in Fremont is a purposely monolithic reminder of his grand intentions. Its always been funny to me that the same governing body (Alameda County) that gives me reminders about parking tickets I didn’t pay, and taxes cans of Mountain Dew at the liquor store 100 feet from me, was preventing him from building a rocket to go to Mars during the pandemic. 

So whatever. I tried to write a bunch of stuff about him, but ended up writing about the same loneliness and lack of connection that everyone has experienced at some point in their lives. It’s the same loneliness that humanity might be leaning into as we go toward whatever the future is. I will release the songs that didn’t get used for this record on some Bandcamp Friday. They are mostly rewrites of “Little Deuce Coup” but with lyrics about electric cars and Eugenics. 

The cover art was drawn by Michael Rudolph. It’s a still from a video I saw of a lady hitting 10-G’s in an airplane. The topic of “freedom of speech” kept coming up in everything I read and listened to. The idea itself is intangible, but people talk about it like it has a clear structure and regulations. Like a mathematical theorem. Or a public pool. 

It reminded me of someone experiencing the punishing levels of gravity in a centrifuge. I kept thinking of some guy thumbing away on a cell phone behind protective glass, as a bookish engineer screams “Sir! He’s about to call The Pope a b*tch on Twitter!” Cut to some high ranking military official that looks like Sterling Hayden in “Dr. Strangelove” losing grip of the cigar in his mouth and muttering “oh my god…” 

That is the first time I’ve seen all of that written out, and I regret everything. I regret this entire record.
