Artist Uma Bista uses her camera to capture powerful visual stories that address gender inequality. Her photograph project “Stay Home Sisters” explores menstrual taboos in Nepal and highlights narratives of resistance and the agency of young women.
 
This poem, written and recited by Uma Bista, accompanies her artwork in the “Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now” exhibition at the Rubin Museum. It is about the story of a woman who endured a twelve-day confinement during her first menstruation.

Many objects in the Rubin’s collection of Himalayan art reflect the Buddhist concept of time, including the interconnected nature of the past and future. About Time aims to reframe our perspective on time and its impact on our lives. 

Performance artist, electronic music pioneer, and filmmaker Laurie Anderson invited a group of her favorite writers, thinkers, and poets to tackle the big questions about time. In this episode, Laurie spends time with the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi—president and CEO of The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT. One of the leading arguments for AI is that it will save us all time. What will we do with the extra time? Does that freed up time have a moral value? So many questions, too little time. This conversation took place on stage at the Rubin in 2024.

This isn’t your average book club. Beginning with this special two-part program and opening reception, the Tibetan Book of the Dead Book Club will draw comparisons between the ancient text and modern-day perspectives on mortality.

Break open the Tibetan Book of the Dead with Buddhist scholar Ramon Prats and professor Terry Williams to take on a goliath of a topic: teenage suicide. Committing suicide while in a state of mental distress has serious karmic implications in Buddhist practice and suicide is the third-leading cause of death for fifteen- to twenty-four-year-olds in the United States. Terry Williams, author of the book Teenage Suicide Notes, evaluates the states of mind of the young people in rural and urban contexts and across lines of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation who have committed suicide or contemplated doing harm to themselves. Can Tibetan Buddhist traditions offer a helpful perspective?

Can mystical experiences alleviate a fear of death? Tony Bossis is an investigator and session guide for the NYU Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Project, a clinical trial investigating the efficacy of a psilocybin-generated mystical experience alleviating distress in persons with cancer. In the Tibetan understanding of transition, the hallucinations witnessed in the bardo, or transitional state, after death need to be recognized as illusory forms of attachment. Otherwise one is bound to be reborn.

In medical school no one teaches you how to let a patient die. Jessica Zitter became a doctor because she wanted to be a hero. She elected to specialize in critical care and imagined herself swooping in to rescue patients from the brink of death. But then, during her first code, she found herself cracking the ribs of a patient so old and frail it was unimaginable he would ever come back to life. She began to question her choice. Does the Tibetan approach to dying offer a real solution to the insurance-driven commodification of palliative care in the United States?
