Altar Form (DRRTYWULVZ Remix)

Kosheen creator Markee Ledge releases his debut solo album ‘Elevate’ on Friday 4th December. 

The album, which has been 3 years in the making, features guest producers including Seven, Leon Switch, dubspeeka and Rinse FM’s DJ Youngsta, plus guest vocalists Alys Be, Susie Ledge and Jodie Elms. The release of ‘Elevate’ is preceded by the single  ‘Make Your Move’ feat. Alys B.

Following 5 studio albums as Kosheen, the band’s songwriter and producer, Markee Ledge, took advantage of the group’s hiatus in recording new material to develop his own project, combining Kosheen-style big vocal tracks interspersed with deep underground electronic sounds. 

The 17-track album, which presents a deeper and dubby perspective of the UK electronic music soundtrack, features 9 vocal tracks including 2 tracks presented as Kosheen remixes: ‘Picture Perfect’ and ‘Purity’ both feature singer / songwriter Susie Ledge. Other vocal highlights include lead album track ‘Talk Is Cheap’ and ‘Saturn’ both featuring Alys Be, the latter also comes in a deeper remix form courtesy of DJ Youngsta. 

Kosheen, one of the UK’s most successful live electronic music acts, came to prominence with the groundbreaking album ‘Resist’ in 2001 following crossover releases ‘Hide U’, ‘Catch’ and ‘Hungry’. The album charted at No. 8 in the UK and went on to sell half a million copies, making it the most successful drum & bass album at that time. Further releases followed including the highly successful follow-up ‘Kokopelli’ featuring the single ‘All In My Head’, and albums ‘Damage’, ‘Independence’ and ‘Solitude’.

‘Elevate’ takes the Kosheen template and twists it into the current underground musical narrative. “I knew I had a bunch of very powerful songs in the bag and I was really digging the real deep sound coming from London and Rinse FM,” Markee explains. “I wanted to reach out to the producers I was feeling and make fresh music and recapture that vibe we had on ‘Resist’ - a real current sound but with soulful, powerful songs.”

From a dimly lit cave in Austin's own underground, Joseph Roberts, aka “Detox Unit”, has been cooking up his own blend of futuristic frequencies for the past 4 years. His aim, to make the imagination run wild; to tickle the brain in impossible ways. Originally hailing from New York, Joseph spent his childhood tinkering with old radios and building computers, fascinated bu the near endless possibilities that they presented. Inspired by artists such as Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Monolake, and Luke Vibert, he picked up a copy of Ableton Live and a myriad of synthesizers and hasn't left his cave since. Now 4 years later Detox Unit has become a familiar and loved name in the Austin experimental music scene known for his intricately woven sets and unique productions.

Hiding in the cold, dark depths of Calgary and Edmonton are Kiefer and Joe, respectively. Culminating to form their new, uncompromising
project, Half Normal. They have previously released music via the much-heralded Noctilux imprint from Calgary. Clearly these guys have deep roots, and as can be heard on this EP, they have honed their production skills to razor-sharp perfection. This EP is a showcase of two talented young producers discovering their combined alchemy to create this four track EP with a dark vision and
bold narrative.

We start with “Slaughter”, which sets the pace with a dark vocal floating in and out of the ether, suddenly your spine is-adjusted by a massive bassline. The intensity constantly builds by sparingly using percussion and fx at just the right moments and using expert vocal sampling techniques. Next is “My Name Is Klen”, which turns the tempo and weirdo-knob up to 172 bpm. Classic breakbeats, mangled to glorious
effect meet thumping 808 kicks, in this rowdy Jungle tune. “Brass Snake”, is Half Normal’s foray into textural half-time footwork. Using delicate percussion and a classic old-school vibe, this tune sounds as if it could have been lifted from Ninja Tune’s back catalogue, but with their own unique twist. Lastly, “Voodoo Magic”, brings things down the rabbit hole into an ayahuasca-induced meditation elevated by lush, clean bass pulses and organic percussion floating lazily around the stereo field. The beat shambles toward you, slowly and mercilessly until you feel you need to run from your dream. Eventually you are brought
back to where you began, and all is safe and right with the world.

When @charktunes & @zimbumusic sent me previews of their new EP, I fell in love with the fetid, metal sounds and wanted to incorporate them into my sets. I took an afternoon and chopped the track up into this remix: a groovier cut with one foot in dubstep and one in slimy bass. Short and sweet, made for DJs.
