This is a 4 channel piece for 4 clarinets, 4 cellos, and 4 voices.  This was composed as an end of semester project for my MFA: Sound program at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Seventeen Years

This 4 channel tape music composition was made using modulated cassette tape loop samples, live feedback with hand held cassette recorders and blank tape loops, voice, and recordings taken in my dad's machine shed using his farming equipment as percussive instruments.  He was the percussionist, I recorded.  This piece is designed to unfold uniquely for each listener as they choose their proximity to the speakers.  No two listeners will have the same exact experience, not only due to a play with proximity, but also because of the underlying associations each listener might volunteer to their own personal listening tendencies.  Each association comes from a place in memory, from life experience; in this way, the piece exists simultaneously in the present and the past.

This track is composed of segments of dialogue over field recordings.  I asked some friends to record a short clip of an environmental sound in their immediate area, and then simply talk for a little bit about how the sound makes them feel, if the sound is special/significant in any way, if it's particular to their environment, anything they felt compelled to share, and recorded using whatever means they had available.  The results were edited and compiled in no methodical order, but instead I relied on intuition to compose the piece.  Originally presented at the School of the Art Institute in 5.1 surround.
