‘Rushing' featuring Quark & Lylli sees him collaborate again with two of the artists who featured on his recent album ‘Songs For The Time Being’, this time with an uptempo footwork-inspired track that twists and turns from acoustic guitar ambience to breakneck vocal chops. ‘Raw ft Stamina’ features the veteran vocal stylings of one of the most well-known MCs in Drum & Bass, dropping into a brutal bass-driven half-tempo punisher that sits somewhere in the Venn diagram between DnB, Hiphop and Future Bass. ‘Buchu ft Motsa & Armour’ is a dark mid-tempo pulsing dance track that combines disparate sounds from senegalese vocal chants and thumb pianos, to organ bass, beatbox, and funk breaks.

True to form, Ruckspin has delivered a sonically warm EP of tracks that defy genre boundaries with his signature production aesthetic.

Songs For The Time Being is the debut solo album from Ruckspin (Dom Howard).

Marking his departure from his role as long term producer for Submotion Orchestra, this album re-defines his electronic work, forging a cinematic sound all of his own.

Alongside his early releases on Ranking & Deep Medi, Ruckspin has produced and toured with Submotion Orchestra for over 10 years, engineering, co-writing and producing 5 albums, 3 EPs and a plethora of remixes. The band achieved universal acclaim, performing headline shows at the Barbican, the Forum and Shepherds Bush Empire as well as countless international shows from Belgium to Thailand. Having left the band, Ruckspin is now focussing his efforts on his own studio work, of which this debut album is a shining example.

Ruckspin has always been involved in a number of projects at any one time, whether it be mixing albums for clients, creating bespoke compositions for brands and creatives or just collaborating on projects with other musicians. He worked on 2 albums as Author with J Sparrow that pushed the boundaries of composition and orchestration in dubstep and underground club music, released dub techno as Leo James and has recently found success with some more uptempo tracks on the legendary Hospital records.
Alongside his personal output, Ruckspin also works closely with Ninjatune’s publishing arm, creating award-winning music for sync in film and television with clients including Nike, Heineken, Lipton and IBM.

With all this going on, it’s no wonder it has taken him over 10
years since his first solo release to finally complete a solo album. It features a number of talented guests, from previous collaborators Quark, Ruth Royall (Hospital, Viper, Soulvent) and J Appiah (backing vocals for Jess Glynne and guest on Footsie’s latest album), to specialist virtuosos Ed Thomas (songwriter for Chase & Status, Jorja Smith, Stormzy, Maverick Sabre), Jinadu (Ultra, Anjunadeep, Shogun) and Om Unit (Cosmic Bridge, Metalheadz, 31 Records, Astrophonica).

Overall, the album has a vivid melancholy woven throughout - greatly influenced as much by the moodiness of 90s downtempo and underground club culture, as by the picturesque ambience of classical piano and string quartets. These elements may sound somewhat at odds compared to an average producer's points of reference, but as a child growing up in south-east London in the same era, Ruckspin spent his teenage years playing violin and viola in orchestras, all the while sneaking in minidisc recordings of the previous night’s pirate radio jungle sets. This somewhat unusual musical foundation has clearly had an influence on his unique approach to composition. The end result is an expertly crafted audiophile experience that shows a versatile producer coming-of-age; progressing from rugged sound-system music for dark warehouses to immersive soundscapes for headphone listening, all the while retaining an ear for lush composition and beautiful melody.
