Yoru has been obsessed with music that traces its roots back to black music for a long time. He has a deep love for bass, sound system culture, and the idea that “music is more than melody and notes, it’s a story, it’s a feeling, it’s a vibe, it’s a family, it’s a community, it’s an identity and a unifying force”. 

This EP is a reflection of his pursuit of a story, a vibe, or a positive feeling. Coming out of lockdown at the same time as emerging from a long hiatus from music production, Yoru wanted to capture a motivating feeling of new positive vibes that we all carve. Yeah, is a response to a series of questions he had when coming back to making music. Do I miss production? Do I miss the vibrating feeling of bass from a well-oiled sound system? Do I have something positive to bring? The answer was, Yeah!

Following a debut Boiler Room performance at the Belfast’s AVA Festival, releases on Extended Play & Nocturne and captivating live set performances at Celtronic, Derry-based Cartin delivers a two-track EP spanning UK hyper-breaks and monstrous 2-step mutations for Rudimentary Records that emphasis even further exactly why the emerald isle is so excited about him.

Belfast based label Rudimentary Records have trailblazed their own distinctive path through the city soundscape, releasing a diverse back catalogue from Fono One, Bass Clef, G3 – and remixes from Amor Satyr and Kaidi Tatham – and more with a strong focus on experimental bass exploration. Cartin’s animated performances and captivating electronic productions have only emphasised the opinion that the emerging artist is next to break following the path led by fellow Irish artists such as Kessler and Sputnik One.

Having contributed a remix to Yoru’s Yeah. Yeah? Yeah! on the label in 2021, the EP feels like a natural progression for both an artist and label with a keen ear for killer club cuts that pull influence from a variety of sources and walk the tightrope between functional and malfunctioning.

‘Grey Skies’ is a cut of emotive, break-beat driven bass-weight. Pulling influence from the worlds of hyper-pop, the breakdowns provide moments of angelic ecstasy before a bass-face jungle riddim breaks and shatters across glitch-club aesthetics. ‘PTSD’ is destined to shut down clubs around the world; a cut of science-fiction fuck-step with a contemporary classical synth-line that’s as monstrous as it is beautiful.

In the first of a series of musical exchanges, we encouraged Danny Scrilla (Cosmic Bridge & Civil Music) and Moresounds (Astrophonic & Cosmic Bridge) to lock horns in a mix of two halves ahead of their gig in Belfast...

Moresounds has garnered support from the likes of Giles Peterson, David Rodigan, Mark Pritchard and Machinedrum following his release on Om Unit 's Cosmic Bridge, and continues to impress with his Astrophonica's release "Blood". 

Moresounds is a proud student of Tubby, a man who found his artistic voice not only in the echoes of the Kingston pioneer’s legacy but also the grooves of hip hop and the psychedelia of rave and dance music.

Throughout these three tracks, The Cyclist applies his unique sound processing approach to excursions through hypnotic ethereal techno, proto trance-inflected breakbeats and melancholic melodies culminating in a distinct kinetic sound that balances discretely between tension and euphoria.

Cold Run Across - Indopan [Eomac Remix]

The New York based South Afircan has been releasing quality dub and techno bliss since 2005 with Echochord, Zam Zam Recordings, Apple Pips, and Mule being reverent supporters of his work. 

These tracks are inspired by Brendon’s love of N-Type’s Rinse FM sets. He wanted to make some very stark minimal dub tracks and see where they ended up. His intention was to see how few elements in each track he could get away with. Of course, when one has sub-bass lines cranked to certain levels one can get lost in the bass alone, which is what he did. So essentially everything else going on in these tracks were developed around the bass.

Alongside this EP comes a 20min ambient mix of the beatless versions mixed by Nodes in Space a DJ duo focused on creating narrative lead audio journeys.

Beat Pharmacy - Beams Of Light

Beat Pharmacy’s Virtual Science Fair is the latest offering from New York’s elusive and highly respected Brendon Moeller, released via the Belfast-based imprint, Rudimentary Records. Described more as a mini-LP, clocking in at just under 54 minutes, it once again highlights Mueller’s discerning subtleties as dub tech producer numero uno.

Having released music with Electric Deluxe, Echocord and Silent Season, Moeller’s prominence in his genre is already well established. He’s worked with many seasoned vocalists and collaborators, as well as DJs and producers from the worlds of jazz, techno, afrobeat and psychedelia, and is held in high esteem by his peers in each category. This E.P. manages to keep the bar extremely high, and is a welcome return to Moeller’s dub-tech trademark sound.

The EP starts with the title track, then moves into Beams of Light. These are two slow spacey dubs, gently coaxing the listener into Brendon’s familiar soundscape, of subtle keys and textures, spontaneously occurring in a natural and uninhibited process, with echoes of his love for techno and jazz hidden beneath their shimmering simplicity. Segments are never pushed beyond their limits, and that’s the secret, his restraint. Plus, his virtuosity as an arranger keeps it all listenable and interesting, where others tend to perhaps extend the dub elements to the point of tedium, Moeller keeps proceedings dimly lit, but never lets the light goes out. 

Haunted Focus, the third track develops the ambient journey even further, a 12 minute dubbed-out bass-driven landscape that surprisingly introduces a jazz-flute. Gently drifting in and out of the mix, in lesser hands this could work against its counterparts, but with Moeller’s musical knowledge and timing it avoids ending up twee. Nutrition Dub and How Do I Know continue to furrow into the E.P.’s deep dub roots, before we’re treated to a 24 minute elongated mixdown of what’s gone before. This bonus uncredited track takes the listener on an increasingly enlighted path, into a joyous exultation of swirling synthesized electronics, before gently closing down proceedings with fluttering percussion, Sci Fi strings and echoing chords. Out July 7th on Rudimentary Records, it’s an essential listening pleasure that shouldn’t be missed.

If you’re a Londoner, and ever been into either hip hop or house, then Noel Watson should need no introduction. Noel, and his brother Maurice, where there right at the start of hip hop in the city, DJing at their groundbreaking warehouse parties on Battlebridge Road, and mixing several of the seminal Streetsounds Electro compilations. Later at their legendary club night, Delirium, they famously helped to break house music in the capital. A while ago now we did two epic interviews, one focused on each scene. I`m not sure if those articles are still online. If not, we’ll try to fix that.

The release came out of a period of enforced isolation that accompanied the turbulence of 2020-21: 

“Like a lot of people at that time, I found myself reflecting on my habits, my lifestyle… I felt I had the opportunity to make some changes, to get straight about how I wanted to continue. I’ve always had a bit of a problem with perfectionism and a tendency to horde half-finished tracks. It feels like you’re storing up some kind of psychic debt or bad juju when you mothball work and refuse to share it like that… Anyway, I was digging through my archives one day and found a batch of beats from 2014-’15 that were clearly in need of rescuing. I’d been listening to a lot of Teklife-style footwork around that time - particularly Traxman. You can definitely hear some of that vibe in there - weird hooks made out of chopped vocals and stuff. I got a bit sick of that sound after I spent an ungodly amount of time making ‘Reach Out’ in 2015, but after some time off I was really feeling that vibe again. So, in the spirit of self-improvement, I resolved to resurrect the stuff, make a few changes and get it the fuck out there.”

Brian Greene and David Baxter (aka Kab Driver) first became acquainted as students at Banbridge Tech, quickly bonding over a shared love of James Brown, IDM and Buckfast. After a fruitful spell in Derry, spent studying music and honing their chops as interns at Blast Furnace recording studio, the duo relocated to a shared house on South 
Belfast’s Ormeau Road, where they began recording and performing as Kinnego Flux. 

As Brian recalls, “ We were listening to lots of Sly, Parliament, James Brown... trying to incorporate funk with electronic elements, with lots of interplay between melodic parts. We recorded using a basic drum mic set and a cheap condenser mic for vocals and horns.” 

In 2009 the duo released 'A Familiar Sound', a collaboration with long-time friend and collaborator Boxcutter. It was around this time that CD-R bootlegs of "Satsuma" first surfaced, after an official release on Belgian label Bug Klinik fell through. Its addictive hooks and slippery, supple grooves left a lasting impression on those lucky enough to nab 
a copy, and more than a decade later, they remain as fresh and vital-sounding as ever. 

Greene’s vocals and Baxter’s bass are signature elements that shine throughout the album. Greene is also an adept drummer and multi-instrumentalist. Baxter, a nifty programmer and keys player who can chop a break with the best of ‘em (having previously produced breakcore and IDM as Filaria). With such an arsenal of skills at their disposal, it’s little wonder that "Satsuma"s liquid grooves move with an easy, irresistible flow. 

‘Loud as you come’ opens as an ominous, ‘70s cop show stakeout, before tumbling into a constellation of hooks orbiting a stomping, ramshackle groove. ‘Unravel’ - co-produced with frequent collaborator Defcon - blends woozy hiphop with sinewy, headnod funk. The title track somehow distills a silky smooth vibe from the kitchen sink approach, layering synth squiggles, field recordings, horns, clarinet, and wordless vocals over an effortlessly funky James Jamerson-eque bassline. ‘Dansak’ is a swaggering tribute to the king of curries, featuring some of the 
gnarliest kazoo hooks ever committed to tape. Lolloping breaks, acid-fried bleeps and drunken horns co-mingle, like so much spice in the slow cooker. It’s a fragrant and heady stew. On closer ‘Pebbles’ Greene’s simmering, double-tracked vocal transmits cryptic messages over a thundering groove. Melodies scatter across reversed synths and warped textures, like stones skipping on some lysergic lake. 

"Satsuma" has aged like a fine tonic wine. From back then to now, or whenever - it still sounds like the future.

Chuck's ruff-n-ready reggae Mix

Sentinelas is the first album release on Rudimentary Records. Produced and conceived by Irish producer Mick “t-woc” Donohoe the album is the result of a trip Donohoe took to Brazil in 2014. Built off samples from records bought in a dusty Sao Paulo warehouse, Sentinelas is the unintentional soundtrack to a 1970s Brazilian educational comic book, fusing together hip-hop, electronic music, and dub to tell a strange-but-true story of discovery, antibodies, and cockroach shit dust. 

Mistakes and accidents are the lifeblood of creativity. In 2014, Donohoe visited a recently opened warehouse in Sao Paulo nicknamed the Feira de Uma Milhao LPs (the Million LP Fair) — appropriate as the place was filled to the brim with records. Together with a friend, Donohoe began a five-day trawl through 7” records looking for gold beneath the dust. As they packed up to leave Donohoe spotted “a quirky, colorful little comic” and stashed a couple copies among his finds. Back at home, Donohoe found the comics while cleaning and listening to the records for samples. Unable to read Portuguese he imagined its tale as that of a little girl, Hermacia, on a space adventure where she encountered robots and aliens. The comics came with their own record, which was missing, and so the idea became to use the vinyl stash to recreate the soundtrack to Hermacia’s adventure. That’s when Donohoe coughed up a bit of cockroach shit dust. 

The album was created using records, analogue synthesizers and FX, and an existing trove of drums and field recordings. The production process began with the samples from Brazil but as new layers of sound were added these receded in the back of the compositions, becoming a spiritual source rather than defining element. True to its soundtrack intent, the album shifts in moods as it progresses: energetic, calm, epic, disturbing, reflective. Each track details an imagined scene of Hermacia’s daring adventure using the universal language of music. Mixed on a Harrison console, created for film and TV work, Sentinelas is a warm ode to record digging and childhood imagination. 

As for how the story ends, it turns out Hermacia was never on a space adventure. She was travelling through the body and the colorful sentinelas were antibodies defending her against the invasion of evil looking foreign germs. Cockroach shit dust.

Its been a long time coming, but we finally have the next instalment of the exchange, however with a collection of excellent exclusives in the mix, it is certainly worth the wait.

These two close friends are prepared to make an impact in 2017, both as collaborators and solo artists. Alex Godoy (Itoa) and Jordan Parsons (Crypticz) couldn’t help but cross paths as both their musical influences encapsulate the continuous blur between Dubstep, Drum n Bass and footwork with Dub being the keystone to their musical arch.

Crypticz has already hit some inspired highs having bagged himself a release on Doc Scott’s `31 Recordings with further exciting announcements to follow in 2017. While good friend and collaborating buddy Iota has had success with two fine releases on Bad Taste Records, which featured some tasty remix work by past contributors to the mix exchange, Touchy Subject (Astrophoica) and Moresounds (Cosmic Bridge).

Itoa has also been on a roll with releases on D-bridges excellent Exit records and tour dates which have seen him bag globe trotting sets that Fillius Fog would be proud of.

Both artist came together on this one, cross pollinated the release by switching styles and techniques which adds depth to this unique release. Alex and Jordan have there own styles and when interlinked like this you can hear the appreciation both producers have for each other.

Rudimentary debuts for Itoa and Crypticz as they combine to producer a solid 4 track dub, techno, footwork, ghetto inspired drum n bass 12”. 

Alex Godoy (Itoa) and Jordan Parsons (Crypticz) couldn’t help but cross paths as both their musical influences encapsulate the continuous blur between Dubstep, Drum n Bass and footwork with Dub being the keystone to their musical arch. 

Crypticz was sucked into the vortex of the uniquely punchy sounds that Itoa had put out and was itching to find out more. At the same time he was pushing the foundations of his on sound, which has Dub.

Jordan (Crypticz) found himself wanting after toying with a few ideas which fell into line with a more dancehall sensibility. He felt the ideas he had, needed something else. He was struggling to put his finger on exactly what was missing, then… enter Itoa’s ‘French Cola and “Peng” releases. Bingo! Jordans finger was now pointed at Alex’s (Itoa) irresistibly joyous drum patterns, and thought… “This guy”, with the happy egg face as a facebook profile, is the man to unlock this business. The pair hooked up and from there worked on the 31 Recordings “MTD” release for Doc Scott. 

After their work together on that beast of a record they wanted to get back to it! Email tennis and facebook chats occurred for some time all the while passing bits and pieces back and fourth. Each time asking questions and encouraging the process for one another. 

Street Drinker was the starting point with Alex leaving it open and sparse for Jordan to roll in with percussion. Dub techniques where leaned on to add a techno, dubstep feel to Valis. 

An instructional dance video was the inspirational magic dust added to the already grounded baseline and obnoxious claps in “How it’s Done”. Jordan admits watching too much Adventure Time was the catalyst for the humours concept of this piece. So… ’come ons', 'shake it' and '1,2,3,4' were sampled from various work out videos and the arrangement tidied up from there. 

Manatata wraps the release up with a dubby roller with erupts with texture and intricate drum patterns and driving kick.

Crypticz & Itoa - How It's Done

Following on from his debut LP 'Garden Reach' in 2016, 'Koriko' is a tale of rediscovery- and the latest offering from UK based producer G3. 

..born out of a time when he had moved away from his hometown and into the capital, where his range of influences and experiences widened- across the 5 tracks 'Koriko' continues to explore some of the ideas heard on 'Garden Reach', only this time more realized. Fusing together elements of Electronica, Grime, Dubstep and Footwork into a world of his own. 'ø' is the EP opener and nod to the event of the same name run by Kode9 - a spot in London where G3 can often be found, soaking up sound and cultivating new ideas. 'Coming Up, Yuliya' and 'I Drink Your Milkshake' are the more energetic cuts. 'aRby' is new territory for G3 in its slow and despondent tone - the main synth melody created from a sample of the British TV show, can you guess it? ;) 'Umami' which concludes the project, again new territory at 160bpm is a glossy yet minimalistic interpretation of Chicago footwork. 

We have also doubled down on this on one with some stellar remix work from some of the finest around. Japanese legend Daisuke Tanabe, Parisians, DeGrandi, and Amor Satyr.
