It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since Digitalism broke through with their anthemic ‘Zdarlight'. Nu-rave and dubstep came and (largely) went; hip-hop morphed into trap; and EDM made pop stars out of dance DJs. Back with their third album, ‘Mirage' – some five years on from sophomore record 'I Love You, Dude' – the German duo have wisely resisted any vogues or trends. Instead, they present a record that takes their much-loved sound and opens it up to new permutations and possibilities.

‘Mirage' sees Digitalism return in their most complete and coherent incarnation yet; the album spanning euphoric radio-friendly electronic pop and guttural dancefloor bangers with equal aplomb. Their songwriting craft has stepped up a notch too, their vocal tracks delivered with more conviction than ever and once again firmly placing them in a position as an act with big crossover potential.

With a newly focused approach, the duo put together ‘Mirage' in the relatively short space of six months. “This time the production felt so natural and clear,” says Isi. “Our secret is our new light-heartedness.” The album was inspired by “deprivation and travel” – a nod to both the trials of their extensive touring that has taken them everywhere from Coachella to Melt!, and their respective residences in London (Jence) and Hamburg (Isi). “Usually, the best ideas just come to us when there’s not much going on immediately around us”, Jence explains of their creative process. “When you’re forced to imagine things, that’s when inspiration is best. You know, when you switch off the light in our bunker studio, it’s really dark, and there’s nothing - until you start creating things in your head - and then as music.”

Dashes of disco, French touch, prog rock, rave and hip-hop are thrown into an eclectic sound palette that colours the album. From the full-power electro-indie of ‘Battlecry' to the upbeat rock flavour of 'Go Time' and the euphoric melancholy of ‘Utopia’, their sensibility for storming riffs and melodies hasn’t waned one bit. Then there’s the scintillating epic 'Destination: Breakdown' and glitchy electro-rap ‘Ism' showing yet more accomplished diversity. The two-part title track shows the evolution of their synth work in stunning fashion, beaming in inspiration from the greats like Vangelis and Tangerine Dream across a mesmerising twelve-and-a-half minute journey that makes for an impressive album centerpiece.

“First of all it’s probably a snapshot of our thoughts, like a brain scan”, says Jence on his evaluation of the new album. "It’s a soundtrack to our own world, but so vaguely put again that other people can identify with it, or come up with their own analyses. It’s meant to be something fantastic, something beautiful, yet fragile. Maybe a parallel universe that you step into, and you get stuck there. Or you get back into normality, had a hell of a ride, and count the days until you can visit it again. It’s meant to stimulate your imagination.”

Rui Da Silva is an electronic music producer. He runs Kismet Records, his own, successful, independent music label. He DJs all over the world.

Rui has been involved in music since he was a kid and in the music business since he set up the Kaos Records label in Portugal in the early 90s with the label he kick started the dance scene in Portugal 

in 1993 Rui creates the legendary Underground Sound of Lisbon the most influential electronic dance band out of Portugal till this day. The Seminal "So get Up" originally released under his label Kaos Records went on to be licensed to Tribal Records in the US, the international release of So Get Up came packaged with mixes from Junior Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia. this record became a classic in the Sound Factory in New York with Junior playing it constantly every saturday. 

In 1999 he moved away from his label Kaos Records and relocated to London in a search for new challenges. He set up Kismet Records and started recording under his own name.

In 2001 his music leapt from club to radio when his song Touch Me became an international number one single. 

Today he continues to produce club tracks and experimental electronic music always, as he puts it, “trying to change the sound and evolve as staying still gets me bored”. 

Kismet is still going strong in the digital age with a mission to “help new upcoming talent to break into the electronic music scene”. 

Rui’s formative years, growing up in Portugal, were spent listening to music and one-deck DJing at parties. Early influences included Tones On Tail, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. “But when I was 16 or 17 I realised that DJing wasn’t fulfilling as i was basically playing other peoples music!” 

After that he started playing bass in a band. “That was frustrating as I was the only one into turning up for the rehearsals.” 

Then, the revelatory experience, he started listening to early house from the US and the UK. “I decided to sell the bass and amp and buy a Roland 909 (drum machine) and start creating music. I liked the way it was all about the music and nothing about image.” 

From there it was only a small step to becoming a producer, party animal, and label boss. 

And the future? More production of course. “If I don’t do music I feel agitated.” And more new ideas.
“Trying to learn a little bit more. Making music is like cooking, you must plan it, and you need to source the right ingredients. But if you cook all the time you can start experimenting. The best part of the creative process comes from mistakes but to make a track you must also be organised, it’s the pull between these two poles that makes a great song.” And plenty of quality releases on Kismet. “After so many years in the business I’m in a position to help people and develop new talent.” 

Rui Da Silva, at once professor and student, mentor and pupil, learning, evolving,  drawing on his experience while surfing the edge of new sounds.
