When I first heard Karl’s instrumental piece ‘Öxar’ I had no idea what the word meant, but I later found out that it meant ‘Axe’ and referred to a very important place in the hearts of the Icelandic people for historical and geological reasons. Karl suggested that his piece might need lyrics, so I thought I’d like to return the gesture for the wonderful music he has offered me recently. The first part of the song is a list of the key places in the area, flowing in sequence with the River ‘Öxará’. Karl kindly helped me with the pronunciation. ‘Öxará’ is a river that flows to ‘Almannagjá’ (part of the Mid Atlantic Ridge – the geological fissure that runs almost the length of the Atlantic Ocean but here its crest creates a rift valley) near the waterfall ‘Öxarárfoss’. This is also the site of Iceland’s ancient parliament ‘Alþingi’ which is the World’s oldest democratic parliament (from 930AD and was active up to 1789). ‘Lögberg’ is the Law Rock, a natural platform for speakers. ‘Þingvellir’ is a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally, ‘Þingvallavatn’ - Iceland’s largest lake. I hope this makes some sort of sense but if you are looking for more information please try the site http://www.thingvellir.is/english.aspx
