After four well-received EPs from the likes of Lupo and Denis Yashin, Vienna's Schönbrunner Perlen label offers up a diverse Various Artists EP for its 5th release. A certain depth characterises the music as ever, with it ranging from buried below the surface and driving to more bass driven and bouncy, but always it is well executed and slick in its design.
Scottish producer and career experimentalist MOTSA goes first with 'Sleepless Nights' and it finds him in a lively yet late night mood. Pulsing rubbery kicks drive the track along as organic piano notes bring a sombre vibe above. The percussion is smooth and slick and proves there is plenty of life in deep house yet. Ken Hayakawa, an Austrian who has released on labels like International Deejay Gigolo, tackles the remix and turns the track into something more kinetic and restless. The grooves are wavy here, and howling distant voices add an air of unease. The second remix comes from German Thomas Stieler who opts for a quick paced house cut with grainy metal percussive sounds peeling off the kicks next to subtle, ever shape shifting chords. It's physical yet more than inviting.

Firmly established as an integral Anjunadeep family member with tracks like "Craymal" and "Back To Love", Beckwith has built a reputation as one of one of the most exciting house producers to come out of New York in the last few years. 

The "Anandia EP" sees Beckwith develop his trademark blend of deep bass and melody with a newfound layer of grit, as heard in the acidic beast that is the title track. 

Building unassumingly from a rolling groove, the track strips back to the bare bones leaving just a distorted vocal refrain before a squelching acid line takes the track into serious late night territory. 

"Clarion" is a bouncier affair, showcasing hints of old-school garage influence with shuffling drums and another distorted vocal weaving between a growling bassline. 

Rounding off the EP is "Life" (feat. Javi), another bubbling groove complete with stylish male vocals from Javi, a rugged, dancefloor ready bassline and crisp, punchy percussion.

For the first single from a 6-track EP from Montreal's Clarian (who is also one half of Footprintz), the Canadian reached well beyond the border to collaborate with Tel Aviv-born, Madrid-based producer Guy Gerber on "Claire." Gerber has been a major player on Israel's electronic scene since 2006, running his own Supplemental Facts label and infusing traces of minimal techno, tech house, downtempo and deep house in his productions, while remaining singular in his approach. Clarian's vocal contributions were at the heart of Gerber's progressive house-leaning Fabric mix from last year, which joined the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Omar-S of artists that turned in single-artist mixes to the series. "Claire" starts amid a queasy vocal snippet (with Clarian's French whisper lodged in at the midpoint) and threatens to go darker and deeper. But a steady handclap and glimmering melodic line uplifts and casts light across this seven-minute track.
