One of our favorite rappers right now - Daniel Son (@brown-bag-money) - was in Denmark performing in Næstved an working on projects with two Danish producers, one of whom - Ghost Notes (@ghostnotes92)- joins him in the podcast.

#120 - Daniel Son & Ghost Notes

I did a one hour themed vinyl mix for the Palestine support event Art for the Unarmed the 28th of December and decided to record the mix afterwards. This is that live recording.

The mix is themed after both political songs and statements, songs supporting Palestine, songs criticizing people for looking the other way, songs about refugees, songs about war and just songs that had a certain mood. A lot of songs are in Danish.

Art For The Unarmed Vinyl Live Mix

We’re crossing the bridge over to our neighboring Copenhagen with no other than Nyboe (DK) hosting the series with the 43rd episode of Podcats. 
 
Nyboe is a Danish vinyl DJ who started his journey into sounds over 20 years ago, specializing in all types of Hip Hop from G-Funk to Boom Bap to Instrumental along with library music, jazz, breaks, neo-soul, trip hop and 90’s R&B. His extensive record collection is a proof of his continuous passion for crate-digging and resulted in his own expertise when it comes to his taste and selection. This has made Nyboe a well-known name in the Danish hiphop-scene, opening up for international acts such as Crimeapple, Boldy James & Alchemist to name a few, aswell as getting recognition from abroad when winning international mixtape competitions by Wax Poetics x Polaroid and Reloop. Nyboe also ran the Danish hiphop label Idiotsikker Records for 10 years where they released 20+ vinyl records and also was responsible for the vinyl-department for the renowned label Run For Cover for 8 years. As for today, his interest in records continues with his own podcast ”Nyboe’s Pod” with a focus on in-depth talks with local and international guests aswell as running his Instagram-page @nyboesvinyler where he showcases records from his collection. 

For this episode we get a mix combining pre and post hiphop library music and jazz along with instrumental beats and breaks, showing how sampling has altered and developed music into something new and how artists can play old genres in new ways inspired by how other cultures alter the state of music. We’re hyped to have Nyboe onboard as he truly showcases his skills with a fine and well-put together mix.

Vinyl Echoes is all about exhibiting underground music the analogue way.
Nyboe and djf1b1 are two different generations of hip hop DJ’s. Nyboe who represents the middle generation in Danish hip hop with an autistic mind, memory and approach to music history and collecting and djf1bi who represents the young generation, with a fresh approach to the analogue way.

The main goal of the program is to spread awareness of the real underground hip hop and vinyl record in form of mixing and selecting and therefore, to hopefully inspire and make the hip hop scene more inclusive to women, the LGBTG+ community and underrepresented minorities.

Vinyl Echoes w/ djf1bi & Nyboe - 22nd April 2024

Nyboe is a Danish hip hop vinyl DJ for almost 20 years - specialising in west coast and south hiphop, boom bap, instrumental sets, Danish rap and crosses into especially library music, jazz, trip hop, breaks and soul.  He is the winner of Wax Poetics x Polaroid's and Reloop's international mixtape contests and has played at everything from hiphop-jams and nightclubs to cafés, bars and his favorite thing, as a warm up act for international and Danish hiphop acts – for example recently and soon artists like CRIMEAPPLE, Boldy James & The Alchemist, Oddisee, XP The Marxman, Guilty Simpson and many more.
 
Nyboe is known for his extensive vinyl collection and cratediggin passion, which he shares on his Instagram page @nyboesvinyler.
 
He also ran the Danish hiphop label Idiotsikker Records for 10 years and was responsible for everything vinyl at the legendary hiphop label and store Run For Cover for many years.  Nyboe also has his own podcast - Nyboe's Pod - and is part of VINYL ECHOES on Black Rhino Radio with djf1bi.

In this mix Nyboe presents 47 of his favorite 90’s West Coast and Southern hiphop track from his personal vinyl-collection plus one Danish from 2001 all blending seamlessly together for this two hour long journey into a timepocket of a unique scene and culture within hiphop.

“Even though a lot of people consider me a boom bap head and a backpacker, my favorite hiphop has always emerged from the South and West Coast of the States – especially from ’94-’97. 

And spending a lot my time in the western part of Aarhus - Aarhus V - when I was a teenager also exposed me to what most people were listening to there if they listening to hiphop - the gangsta rap and G-Funk.
 
Most of my favorite rappers are from there and although there are some ignorant lyrics – which you can easily find among New York rappers as well – this is where storytelling was always an important part of the lyrics.
 
It’s not just the storytelling that artists like Eightball & MJG, UGK, Scarface, Dru Down and many more perfected, it’s also about the musicality and the sound. Back then the G-Funk had way more bounce and the flows were to me way more exciting. So the mix has mostly focus on the sound and finding songs that not only fit well together, but also represents and portraits the scene and sound that I wanna present. So it’s also a lot of deeper cuts and I have a feeling that only a select few in Denmark will know all of the tracks in this mix.
 
The mix is also a tribute to the skate videos coming out of my hometown Aarhus, both in the earlier days but certainly also in newer times, from the likes of VX8000 and Doggs4Life, where you can as easily hear a track from Dru Down, Ice Cube or Tru as you can a Pete Rock, Sean Price or Biggie cut.

n this episode ⁠Nyboe⁠ has stopped by the local Copenhagen record store ⁠Paname City Records⁠ to talk to the owner, French DJ and vinyl collector ⁠Adrien Pastor⁠, about how his brother influenced his taste in music and about discovering hiphop in Paris in the 90's. 


Also about rapping, DJ'ing and starting to sell records' by the river and later opening his own webshop and now record store, having a label and releasing instrumental hip hop right when it found it's setting, French movies and much more.


There is also an exclusive clip from one of the first tapes ever released with Adrien rapping over his brothers' beats and the track "From Yoruba To Santeria (Lagos, La habana)" from one of the releases on Adrien's former label Still Muzik with Al Quetz

In the second episode of Vinyl Echoes djf1bi and Nyboe dive into the Danish hip hop scene, from the producers' point of view. 

Denmark may seem like a small country, but it’s a big country on the hip hop map and has had a huge output and impact on not just the national but also international hip hop scene.

Big up to all the legends and all the one we forgot to mention. There are so many from when the first Danish producers started in New York in the late 80’s to now where we have several producers not just in the underground, but also in the mainstream.

There is one only language spoken when it’s about Vinyl Echoes and that’s hip hop!
