Ahead of their debut US live shows at SXSW Belgian electronica trio VUURWERK return with their first proper release for Lo Recordings, ‘Warrior’ EP, featuring guest vocals from Sylvie Kreusch, lead singer of the Belgian band Soldier’s Heart.

As well as playing SXSW VUURWERK will play live at the David Lynch designed Silencio club in Paris on March 3rd. At this special event the band will premiere a new video for ‘Warrior’ that they have been working on in collaboration with up and coming Belgian fashion designers STUDIO KRJST before playing live with a guest appearance from Sylvie Kreusch.

Opening with the ominous ‘Black Aerial’, VUURWERK introduce us to their new work via a soundscape of claustrophobic Industrial Hip-Hop beats, rattling Techno percussion before the track bursts into life taking its cue as much from the Chicago Footwork scene as it does from the Post-Dubstep Electronica the band have mined on previous releases.
 
If ‘Black Aerial’ bridged the old and new then ‘G.R.I.P.’ itself is a clear indication of what is to come. Minor key pop that is stained with tears of regret, the music’s late night smudged and bleary textures are contrasted with a beat that tips its hat to the syncopated rhythms of UK Garage providing a fitting setting for Belgian singer Climb X’s weary, lovelorn vocals to bury themselves in.
 
Providing alternative mixes are hotly tipped Swedish trio DNKL, whose epic cinematic reinterpretation transports the track from a Brussels bedsit to the wide open and majestic Scandinavian fjords and Houndstooth recording artist House of Black Lanterns, who injects more than a hint of his hometown Berlin into the track with a dark and claustrophobic, sludge filled techno rework.

VUURWERK - G.R.I.P. ft. Climb X (DNKL Remix)

DREAD [Fearful or anxious anticipation/A source of fear, awe, or reverence]: This angst-fuelled track plays around with the experience of becoming numb and indifferent to things once important. ‘Dread’ recurs as a mantra throughout the course of the song, thus putting emphasis on the unstoppable hankering after something new and exciting. The eerie feelings of craving and apathy are presented hauntingly through a poetic narrative that is delicately cloaked in a mantle of minimal, yet soothing electronic music.

GLINTS is born out of a love for language, luscious sentences, and sincere music. Growing up in Belgium (Antwerp) with a British background proved to be a fertile breeding ground for the creation of an original sound that combines elements of hip-hop, electronic music, and pop. GLINTS is the brainchild of Jan Maarschalk Lemmens. The inciting event however, consisted of meeting and collaborating with producer Jergan Callebaut (VUURWERK) and guitarist/producer Mathias Bervoets. The project sets out to titillate the senses whilst reinstating the importance of poetic quality in lyrics.

EP charts the various stages that arise from this longing for the novel and the exciting that are initiated in ‘Dread’. Yet whether the songs revolve around feelings of gutted gloom or translucent elation, the emphasis on poetic language remains. The whole venture is presented in silky yet fiery electronic arrangements and the occasional angelic harmony.

VUURWERK - FEUERWERK EP

Having played their debut US shows at SXSW in March, headlined festival stages at home over the summer and picked by Apple Music for their inaugural ‘Best Electronica of 2015’ playlist, 2015 will go down as a vintage year for up & coming Flemish trio VUURWERK. Capping the year the band are releasing the ‘Feuerwerk’ EP, a 5 track EP compiling the best of their releases for Lo Recordings to date.

Featuring the Industrial Ambience of ‘Black Arial’, the electronic-pop of ’Warrior’ (featuring Sylvie Kreusch of Soldier’s Heart) and their two collaborations with Climb X (aka Max Colombie from Oscar & The Wolf), ‘Wakening’ and the heartbreaking ‘G.R.I.P’, the EP shows off the depth and eclectic nature of the band. 

And having spent much of the past few months winning over new fans with their live A/V show at festivals around Europe, it’s only fitting that VUURWERK complete the EP with an unreleased live version of ‘Warrior’ recorded by the band in Austin, Texas earlier this year. 

Currently at work on their debut album, expect to hear a lot more from this Belgian band in 2016…

Born in Brussels, based in London: Electronic trio VRWRK reflect on a life in music, mental health and creativity in their EP and short documentary. 

After the promise, release and pressure of their 2018 debut album "On The Outside", the group took to the a small sanctuary in the form of Sawmills Studios (home to albums by Muse and The Stone Roses) in Cornwall. A studio only accessible by boat - they went to, quite literally, the edge of the world.

Working with a small core of friends, in the form of their live band members (Gert Malfliet & Jens Paeyeneers), and the Norwegian experimental composer Bendik Hagerup,  "Insight: Sawmills Acoustic Sessions" reflects on a weekend of acoustic reinterpretations - not only on their burnt out mental states, but some of their favourite songs from their debut album On The Outside. The documentary (shot by London based Jed Darlington-Roberts) that comes alongside the EP forms a creative expression around a moment in many artists’ career that is common-found, and perhaps a cautionary tale.

In collaboration with Antwerp's fashion brand Café Costume, and Studio Brussels' De Warmste Week, VRWRK is donating all proceeds to Belgian based mental health charity "Te Gek?".
