Take a sonic vacation to one endless night in 1980s Manhattan, just in time for the weekend. 

“You come with me, fly away, on a journey…”

Above your head cosmic synthetic frequencies dance from the tweeter array, the horns growl with rhythmic pulsations and earth shattering gospel. Finally the RLA bass cabinets boom and shake your body into a state of kick-drum-driven, Moog-fueled hypnosis. 

Hands come together and clap in perfect synchronicity with the crack of the snare drum as legs gyrate and spin. The crowd is one, under a divine spell, mesmerized by a groove that transcends the passing of the hours outside in the breaking pink dawn as it rises above the glistening towers. You escape deeper into the endless night, leaving your body, for one last time, on a journey you hope will never end.

NB: Listen to it LOUD. I've restored and expanded each individual track, before carefully remastering in the mixdown for maximum impact and in doing so unearthed some hidden harmonics and frequencies that really bring the music to life for a more immersive experience.

1. We absolutely loved your mix! May we ask what your main inspirations are and started collecting and playing music? 

So happy that you loved it! There were two occasions where I had a musical experience that completely blew my little mind. The first one: I heard Kraftwerk’s ‘The Man Machine’. I’d gotten it as a birthday present from my Aunt on my 13th birthday, she’d gifted it to me on the promise “This will change your life.” It actually really did. My Mom had a really thumping stereo system at the time and I remember so clearly just sitting in the middle of our living room, on the floor, being totally annihilated by sounds I’d never heard before. Every music-obsessive has one of these spark-to-gasoline moments that ignites a flame in you, and this was mine. I instantly bought everything they’d ever made and indoctrinated myself with synthesizers. 1978 had never sounded so new, but also never further away. I honestly just stopped consuming anything new. This kick started a so far life-long obsession with digging for music. I was constantly searching for similar music. Eventually I got really into early electronics and minimal wave, which then led to Italo-disco of course, and suddenly and quite by coincidence hit a wall that changed everything again for me: disco and the beginnings of house music. Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.

​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

This mix is a selection of personal faves from this fascinating era.

Its playful melodies and disco drum machines could be from mainland Europe, it's strange synth textures could be Japanese whilst its sardonic vocals could be from a post-industrial town in Thatcher's Britain; we just don't know.

This is Vol. 5... Once upon a time, there was this music called HOUSE. It was played from vinyl records on TURNTABLES. None of it was available for download. You had to ask the DJ for a track ID. This music was being played IN CLUBS, only. Back then you had to be in the House to listen & DANCE to House.

I'm not saying this was the better days but this is a flashback to these times. Vinyl only, one-take DJ mix. You'll find none of these tunes on Shazam or on Beatport or iTunes. Oh and forget about Spotify, too. This is da real shit for real headz... Straight from New Jersey, Chicago, London and New York City.

RUPERT (b. 1991) aka Robert Paul Gardner, is a British DJ based in Berlin. Cutting his teeth from the age of 17 in the queer club scene of East London, RUPERT(then known as Alpha Deluxe) developed a reputation for a bold and eclectic style of musical curation that swung from Italo obscurities through the lavish extravagances of New York disco and over to the beginnings of house and new beat. Holding a weekly residency at Shoreditch’s infamous The George & Dragon alongside nightlife icon and DJ Princess Julia, as well as regular appearances at Dalston Superstore, Vogue Fabrics and East Bloc et al,  RUPERT covered London in a frenzy of cowbell infused euphoria.

Whilst falling ever deeper into a pool of obscuro electronica and post-disco after relocating to Berlin in 2015, RUPERT began regular residencies at Barbie Deinhoff and Cafe Futuro, opting to eschew club gigs in favour of loungier listening environments and soundtracking those smokey, endless nights.

After an extended hiatus from DJing that focused on producing the darkwave synth-pop project Szalazar, 2022 sees the return of a dancefloor-ready RUPERT. 

Dubby, synthesizer-tinged disco rubs shoulders with powerful vocals and frenetic drum machine rhythms to deliver a sound that reverently echoes and pays homage to the underground nightlife scene of 1980's New York and Chicago, allowing one to experience an element of sonic time travel. Transporting you to dancefloors you wish you’d been alive to witness.
