An Essex Terret

“A most useful collection for draft horses was a set of bells. Teams, three or four in a line, pulling a heavy draw or timber carriage were the ‘juggernauts’ of the day. They took all the road and they could not ‘back up’, so they each carried 2,3 or 4 bells in an iron framework  above either the saddle or the collar to warn other road users of their approach. The carter in the field , saw these teams on the road and envied the bells. More than likely they were well outside his financial reach, so what could he do? He used the skills he had and the materials that were available and made them himself – a corn dolly terret.”

The terret on the cover of this album is a traditional Essex design, and the original which hangs in our dining room was made by Millie Smith of Barnet Canesmiths.

All songs composed/arranged by Tony Kendall who sings and plays guitar, lute-guitar, dulcimer and acoustic 6-string bass.

AN ESSEX TERRET – more songs of my Essex heartland – a selection which combines newly collected and newly arranged traditional songs, plus a clutch of brand new songs, all with that magical Essex connection.

1. WALTHAMSTOW  1890

This track includes four songs collected from the archives of Vestry House Museum, Walthamstow, plus a local version of the traditional “Sheep Shearing Song”, the poetry is mine.

Unashamedly a Wessex traditional song. This one’s for Sara and also for Ray, and the Summer of 1990 when this song became our theme tune. (Trad. arr. Tony Kendall. 1988)

A few episodes ago we spoke to Amal Azzudin, one of the Glasgow Girls. She recommended speaking to ”the legend “ Mr Girvan featured in the Glasgow Girls story, movie and musical. 

Euan Girvan was a bi-lingual support teacher in Drumchapel High at the time a large number of refugee and asylum seekers and their children arrived in Glasgow. He describes the atmosphere at the time, the reason Glasgow Girls became the focus of activism and how the school and Glasgow City managed this new challenge. He also speaks of the political background and impact of the first Home Office detentions and the source of his personal motivation.

He reads his father's poem:

Love is not only kindness in the eye,
Like the bright sun of a warm Summer day.
Nor sympathising with a ready sigh,
As a soft wind to sun-tired gardens may.
Love is to give and give with all our power,
As summer gives, to make the world we know
