Valerian Hops has a hypnotic sleep inducing affect, and can induce calm, loosen inhibition & free the tongue, yet too much has disastrous consequences.
This song details a search for love through alcohol induced delirium, which often resulted in waking outside, in fields, by water, under the stars. Musically the song is influenced by Paul Giovanni's Wicker Man soundtrack, and has roots in English folk.

Barley, Hops & Yeast is the second track on the EP. It's been cleaned up and re mastered with strings.

In New York the sea-birds all took to the wing,
every sky had a huge murmuration,
all the aeroplane runways were covered in bees,
and they shut down the worlds aviation,

Countryside sheep were all shutting the roads,
and tree leaves were shutting the stations,
pelican crossings would no longer bleep,
there was no way to reach destinations,

Jungles filled up with platoons of baboons,
and fishes blockaded the harbours,
super worms flew from the glow of the moon,
and the animals penned in their farmers,

Orca and minke protested in Wales,
and dragons flew up from Komodo,
pigs were revolting all over the Hague,
and the ants in Antigua went loco,

In Miami dolphins broke fisher boat mast’s,
the bears up in Russia blew natural gas,
the sheep down in Auckland attacked plastic clothes,
while legions of skunks made the world hold its nose,

Pandas in China knocked down sweating shops,
as bookworms ate cables and chewed gigaflops,
the grown ups and leaders were stuck with no clue,
as the phones of the world streamed the naturenet through!

It was like the slowed sound of a hummingbird wing,
being blended with waves from the sea,
and then swirled all around in a nightingale’s song,
and dripped from the dew drops of trees.

‘Each morning the blackbirds all sing to the dawn,
and the mackerels sing loudly through bottoms,
naturenet speaks in a language and words,
that grown ups have somehow forgotten.

Each springtime the flower heads sing to the bees,
while the owls sing along to the moonlight,
Whales sing their songs past the coastline and seas,
but the people have lost nature’s foresight!

Let’s wake up the grown ups, clear out their deaf ears,
for their senses and brains are now sleeping,
we need to remind them, get rid of their fears,
show the secrets that nature is keeping.’

'Jeanes' single ‘Simple Jayne’ was originally recorded as a demo intended but never sent to John Peel. It was captured in a Parisian bedroom as the dawn chorus streamed inside from an open bedroom window. Originally released to critical acclaim in 2017, the new version is accompanied by a quartet of pastoral strings.

With the constant barrage of noise from 'man made' things, fighting for our attention every waking second, many of us forget the soft call of natures voice.
'Jeanes' songs tell stories of sleeping fields, breathing trees & drunken bees.

Inspired by an article by Ian Macdonald about Nick Drake which said 'sensitive young people often have a horror of being understood for fear of losing their uniqueness, and in the process finding that they are not as unique as they like to think. The vocal was recorded in Catherine Hershey's Parisian home, with wonderful notes of morning bird song coming through the open windows.

Written after reading a quote from Roald Dahl about eye smilers, and photographs called 'Heavenly Creatures' by Benjamin Alexander Huseby of Behati Prinsloo, Felicity Gilbert and Romina Lanaro, showing two girls asleep, entwined in a summer field. Emily Grace Zornado recorded her beautiful layered harmonies and vocals at the height of summer, near a small national park in Danielson Connecticut.

'Jeanes' Debut EP 'Sleeping Leaves' tells stories of sleeping fields, breathing trees & drunken bees.

Two of Russell's favourite books are called 'the secret life of plants' by Peter Tompkins, and the secret life of trees by Peter Wohlleben which explain the science surrounding plants and trees, and how they communicate, nurture their young, count and are self aware. The song is about an early morning walk, as the first rays of sun rise, the rustle of the leaves, as trees sway, breathe and call for the bees to come and pollinate them. The music strives to capture the mood of Linda Perhacs Parallelogram's particularly her beautiful Chimacum Rain. The song has been paired with English classical strings, arranged by Russ and Tom Sidebottom.

Trees Hug Bees is the fourth track on the EP.

'Jeanes' new single ‘With Leaving Birds’ sees Dougie Harley sing a story of goodbye from the banks of a Scottish sea loch*.
The song tells of a lover compelled to leave, regardless of how much they are begged to stay. Set in autumn as winter approaches and the birds are called to other shores.
The 17th century English minister & scientist Charles Morton wrote a about how birds migrate to the moon and back every year. Ancient sailors believed birds returned from space to land on their ships.
Medieval encyclopedia’s have texts about barnacle geese growing from trees over water. From Ophelia and Shakespeare to Homers iliad the literary world is awash with stories of migration and water & sea. These are the inspiration for ‘with leaving birds’.
Written by Russell Jeanes and squirrelled away on scraps of paper and four track tapes for 30 years, then re-imagined from a cottage in the Yorkshire Woods.
*‘With Leaving Birds’ was captured in autumn near the sea, using a mic & equipment specially bought and hand delivered to Scotland for the recording of this song.
